Job Summary

JOB TITLE: Band Director QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university.

  • Valid Alabama teacher certificate in the area of instrumental music or other applicable subject area.

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Must meet background clearance requirements a specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

REPORTS TO: Principal



TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system's approved compensation plan.

Length of the work year and hors of employment shall be those established by the system.

REQUIRED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.

  • Establishes a positive classroom climate and effectively manages band and instrumental music instruction within that environment.

  • Develops and implements a program of instruction based upon the goals and standards of the National Association for Music Education.

  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.

  • Prepares the band and other instrumental groups for appropriate public performances in keeping with the expectations of the school, principal, and community.

  • Directs the organization, supervision, and discipline of students during classes and at public events.

  • Works with other band directors and school officials in the school system to ensure a continuous and correlated development through all levels of band instruction.

  • Coordinates the preparation and distribution of materials that inform students and their parents of the requirements for band participation, band policies, schedules, and related program information.

  • Attends meetings, practices, games, events and activities associated with assigned band direction responsibilities.

  • Works with the principal, school staff and boosters in improving and maintaining existing facilities, equipment, uniforms, and band resources.

  • Demonstrates proper professional and ethical behavior at all times.

  • Prepares and administers the band program budgets; maintains equipment inventory and maintenance records; coordinates scheduling, transportation, supeNision and publicity for the school band program.

  • Approves and directs sales and advertising campaigns to benefit the band program; seeks collaborative partnerships with community agencies and grant sources to benefit the band program.

  • Expends funds and makes purchases for the band program according to established school system accounting procedures.

  • SupeNises and coordinates participation in competitive events involving individual band students and the school band program.

  • Ensures to the maximum extent possible, the safety and well-being of all participants in the band program.

  • Coordinate and supeNises the auxiliary or adjunct groups that perform with the band.

  • Coordinates the proper maintenance and use of instrumental music equipment and facilities.

  • Promotes the band program through appropriate recruiting and publicity activities.

  • Actively supeNises students during assigned duty before, during and/or after school as directed.

  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.

  • Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.

  • Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supeNisory personnel.

  • Attends conferences and training sessions to improve skills and programs.

  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supeNises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.

  • SeNes as needed on committees, representative bodies, and/or task forces to improve system seNices and/or student achievement.

  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.

  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures

  • Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supeNisor.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITES:

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, lead, manage, evaluate, and implement programs for student success.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.

  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.

  • Ability to organize and supervise students, volunteers or designated staff members; manage budgets; and, develop curriculum and programming specific to the needs of students as designated.

  • Knowledge and skill in the development and effective operation of a school instrumental music program.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Knowledge of first aid and safety procedures.

  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.

  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.

  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.



EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
