The TV Engineer and Technology Manager is responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of CreaTV and Open San José’s AV equipment, technology, and maintenance. The position reports to the CEO and works in direct collaboration with Directors and other Managers. The position is a thought leader, helps set the tone for our organizational culture, and helps lead the alignment of our vision with our operations.

Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the organization’s technical vision as it relates to AV systems, cablecast, and media production.
- Provide leadership to department managers in a manner that supports the organization’s culture, mission, and values.
- Conduct research on leading-edge technologies, evaluate implementation feasibility, and establish schedules for replacing or phasing out outdated equipment.
- Oversee the cablecast of four TV channels, the organization’s website, OTT platforms, and archives, ensuring technical standards are consistently met for content distribution.
- Manage technical and engineering support for the County of Santa Clara and the City of San José, ensuring contract requirements are fulfilled for filming and distributing public meetings.
- Oversee the technical functioning and maintenance of AV systems and equipment, including the TV studio, flypack, production van, and community center.
- Oversee the acquisition of equipment to meet annual organizational goals for both onsite and offsite needs.
- Maintain a comprehensive equipment inventory and conduct regular checks at least annually.
- Supervise technical staff responsible for routine maintenance to ensure audio/visual and IT systems remain operational.
- Provide technical assistance as requested to staff and partners
- Support database management, design, and recording strategy for external reporting, communications, and internal impact measurement.
Technical Expertise
- Familiarity with SDI routing, fiber patching and routing, and network patching and routing.
- Familiarity with control room design and operation.

- Strong team leadership and intra-team collaboration skills.
- Ability to work creatively and flexibly in a team environment, operating autonomously under minimal supervision, while accepting direction and guidance when appropriate.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of community media, civic tech, public access TV, and the nonprofit media field.
- High degree of technological knowledge and a willingness to learn and develop new technology and media skills.
- Strong financial management and planning abilities.
- Manual dexterity and coordination required to operate small push buttons, keys and switches associated with electronic devices and computers.
- Ability to operate video equipment during productions and education courses.
- Able to work a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends.
- A bachelor's degree in television/media production, Broadcast Engineering, or a related field, and at least five years of full-time television/media production experience; or any combination of education, certifications, and directly related practical experience that provides the equivalent background and skills.
- At least 5 years of experience leading or managing technical or production teams.
