Function Summary:
The CAD Modeler is responsible for creating accurate, production-ready 3D models and drawings based on customer prints, physical samples, and internal engineering requirements. This role supports CRD’s engineering, estimating, and production teams by producing clean, organized, parametric models that maintain design intent, manufacturability, and alignment with CRD’s established modeling standards. The ideal candidate is experienced, disciplined, and highly organized. They must already understand how to build structured, reference-driven models and be able to adopt and improve CRD’s modeling practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Convert customer drawings and prints into accurate CAD models and production-ready drawings.
  • Build fully parametric models with proper feature hierarchy, references, relationships, and naming conventions.
  • Create and manage multi-level assemblies, including functional mating and cross-part references.
  • Prepare clear and accurate engineering documentation for internal and customer approvals.
  • Measure and model customer sample parts using the Faro Arm, Peel Scanner, and other metrology tools.
  • Process and clean scan data to create manufacturable geometry.
  • Translate scanned or measured parts into dimensional and toleranced CAD suitable for manufacturing.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles across tube bending, laser cutting, CNC machining, welding, and assembly processes.
  • Model tube structures, sheet metal components, machined parts, welded assemblies, and fixtures.
  • Support prototyping and 3D printing when needed.
  • Identify modeling issues, manufacturability risks, or unclear requirements and propose creative, reliable solutions.
  • Improve modeling workflows, templates, and best practices over time.
  • Ensure all models are clean, organized, and easy for other engineers to understand and modify.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 3–5 years of professional CAD modeling experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or a similar CAD system.
  • Ability to create parametric, reference-based models and manage complex assemblies.
  • Experience with Faro Arm, CMM workflows, or 3D scanning tools such as Peel Scanner.
  • Familiarity with tube structures, sheet metal modeling, machined components, welded assemblies, fixture design, GD&T, and DFM principles.
  • Highly organized modeling approach with clean feature trees, logical references, and consistent structure.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with engineering, estimating, and production teams.
  • Ability to work independently and deliver accurate models on tight timelines.

Preferred Traits:

  • Organized and methodical in modeling approaches.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Curious, resourceful, and willing to propose better methods.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-mix manufacturing environment.
  • Able to balance speed with precision.

Success in This Role Includes:

  • Models that are clean, parametric, well-structured, and easy for others to work with.
  • Accurate and timely modeling of scanned or measured customer samples.
  • Drawings that clearly communicate manufacturing intent.
  • A problem-solver mindset that improves clarity, reduces errors, and accelerates workflow across the engineering and production teams.
