Controller

Location: Onsite in Virginia, MN

Compensation: $120,000–$150,000, based on experience

Additional Compensation: Highly qualified candidates, including those with an active CPA license, may be eligible for higher compensation

Position Summary

Our client is a well-established and growing organization in the energy industry with approximately 400 employees and $310 million in annual revenue.

Reporting directly to the Owner, the Controller will lead all accounting and finance operations while providing strategic financial leadership to support the company's continued growth.

This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys partnering with executive leadership to drive business performance.

What You'll Do

• Lead all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and financial reporting
• Supervise, mentor, and develop the accounting team while fostering accountability and continuous improvement
• Participate in the hiring, termination, and development of accounting, bookkeeping, and customer service teams
• Oversee month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
• Prepare financial statements and reports for ownership
• Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support strategic business decisions
• Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures
• Oversee forecasting and cash flow management
• Coordinate internal and external audits
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local financial regulations
• Oversee tax planning and compliance in partnership with external CPA firms and auditors
• Monitor financial performance, identify trends, and recommend operational improvements
• Evaluate and improve accounting systems, processes, and workflows
• Support acquisitions, financing activities, and other strategic initiatives
• Partner with department leaders throughout the organization to provide financial guidance
• Present financial reports and key performance indicators directly to the Owner
  
  

What You Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• CPA designation strongly preferred
• Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience
• Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing an accounting or finance department
• Demonstrated experience leading the full accounting function within an organization
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls
• Experience overseeing financial audits and working with external auditors
• Advanced proficiency with accounting software, ERP systems, and Microsoft Excel
• Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the oil, propane, fuel distribution, or energy industry
• Background working within privately held or family-owned businesses
• Experience leading accounting process improvements and system implementations
• Strong understanding of inventory accounting, cost accounting, and operational finance
• Experience supporting executive leadership with strategic financial planning and business analysis
