Role Description - Museum Assistant (Temporary - One Year Position)
The Crawford County Historical Society welcomes individuals to apply for the role of Museum Cataloging Assistant. Reporting to the Society’s Executive Director and Project Managers, this role will assist in cataloging and properly storing items that have been deemed by CCHS and a community partner’s staff as worthy of being preserved as artifacts for future museum exhibits.
Day to Day responsibilities will include:
- Describing artifacts identified for long term preservation by CCHS and its partner including dimensions, identifying markers, and other physical characteristics.
- Researching items to get specific descriptions and entering said descriptions into museum cataloging software with photos and other details
- Marking items as directed with catalog numbers and/or QR codes for future identification
- Placement of items in storage folders/boxes/etc to museum standards
- Other duties as assigned in relation to assisting with museum collections and exhibit development
This contractor position, at 20-25 hours per week with an initial duration of one year (and the opportunity to continue) will be located at a combination of the Society offices in Meadville and a local community partner’s location. Training on CatalogIt Museum Software and best practice skills for marking artifacts and their proper storage will be provided.
Qualifications:
- Computer competency (data entry, typing, using of simple software programs) required.
- Excellent organizational skills, problem solving skills, follow-through, and attention to detail and accuracy.
- Experience in manufacturing or history/museum related fields preferred.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move artifacts and materials (up to 40lbs.).
- Work may involve frequent bending, climbing, and sitting and standing for prolonged periods.
- Manual dexterity for safe object handling.
- Must have a valid drivers license.
