Position: Chief of Schools
Reports to: Superintendent
Terms of Employment: 12 Months
Pay: ADMIN VII - Central Office Administrator Scale (commensurate with experience)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Nature of the Job
The Chief of Schools is responsible for the supervision of the district’s 26 schools and school leaders. The individual supervises and evaluates Principals and provides guidance and leadership related to principal leadership, school performance, school-based personnel, school finance, and school operations and resources. The Chief of Schools will mentor Assistant Principals (non- evaluative) with the intent to establish and implement an internal administrator pipeline. The Chief of Schools serves as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet and works closely with executive staff on strategic planning, improvement planning, and goal attainment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides Principals and Assistant Principals with frequent, actionable feedback to build principals’ leadership, instructional and management capacities resulting in gains in academic achievement for students
- Develops and build a high-performing area structure focused on supporting the work of Principals and their leadership teams
- Institutes routine systems of principal-led school performance data reviews to dialogue, share and develop strategies to address areas of concern;
- Engages with the Superintendent of Schools and fellow leaders in developing communication systems that ensure the smooth flow of information (both vertically and horizontally), to concentrate efforts to best support schools and increase student achievement;
- Leverages the resources of central office departments and teams and coordinates their collaboration with principals in the best interests of schools;
- Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability to monitor the work of the principals and school teams in devising, implementing and executing a plan of action for school improvement;
- Fosters meaningful relationships with principal and key stakeholders to create a strong leadership structure to support the learning of all students; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possess a strong background in principal leadership; demonstrated competence in the ability to manage and supervise personnel;
- Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with principals, executive leadership and other stakeholders at all levels;
- Ability to apply critical thinking skills in program planning and rendering solutions to various issues;
- Manage financial, material and human resources effectively;
- Ability and demonstrated competence in collecting, analyzing and using data and information to plan, implement and make recommendations regarding programs;
- Ability to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate program goals and initiatives targeted at increasing student achievement;
- Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks, projects and responsibilities; possesses the flexibility to adapt as necessary;
- Ability to exercise strict confidence in handling sensitive and confidential information;
- Possess skills in collaborative leadership of individuals and groups; supports the department’s vision and promotes open communication; and
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to produce comprehensive reports and deliver presentations.
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in school administration preferred;
- Doctorate degree preferred. A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory and/or administrator experience required.
Certification
- Holds or is eligible for a valid professional North Carolina license.
- Endorsement in School Administration
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversee and provide supervisory guidance and direction to all school principals.
