Performs unskilled to semi-skilled work for the County Water Department installing, maintaining, and repairing water and fixtures.

Unearths, repairs and replaces water lines, mains and connection fixtures.
Installs water taps; installs and repairs fire hydrants, water meters, and water valves.
Fills in and resurfaces roads, driveways and yards; rakes and edges yards and roads at repair sites.
Drives service truck to work sites.
Responds to maintenance and repair needs after hours and on weekends, as necessary.
Performs Other Related Work As Required.
May be required to serve during times of disaster.

Graduation from high school and some experience in the maintenance field; or any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

Working knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in public works construction and maintenance operations.
Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of varied public works construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to operate trucks and motorized equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time under arduous conditions as required by work assignments.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and water/wastewater treatment plant equipment including computers, calculators, pumps, hand tools, etc. Must be able to maneuver large pipes, valve equipment and other materials associated with water distribution equipment. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
