A day in the life as a Director, Facilities & Maintenance...

  • Strategic Leadership & Planning

    • Define decision-rights, escalation paths, and performance metrics for maintenance, facilities, and ESG initiatives across the network to ensure accountability and transparency.
    • Serve as the enterprise owner for maintenance and facilities governance, ensuring policies, standards, and procedures are documented, current, and auditable.

  • Reliability, CMMS, & Preventative Maintenance Strategies
    • Own enterprise CMMS strategy and execution, including system selection, configuration, data governance, and ongoing enhancements (e.g., PM optimization, asset hierarchies, work order compliance, KPI dashboards).
    • Design, implement, and enforce preventative, predictive, and condition-based maintenance programs for conveyors, sorters, forklifts, automation, and critical facility systems.
    • Lead root-cause failure analysis (RCFA) and reliability improvement initiatives, ensuring learnings are captured, standardized, and deployed across sites.
    • Own critical spare parts strategy, lifecycle forecasting, and vendor-managed inventory for high-risk and long-lead assets.

  • Automation & Controls
    • Provide technical oversight and governance for PLC-based controls and HMI systems (Allen-Bradley, Siemens), coordinating with controls engineers, integrators, and IT/OT stakeholders.
    • Lead formal change-management and change-control processes for automation, controls, and facility system modifications to ensure safety, reliability, cybersecurity alignment, and compliance.
    • Review and approve vendor designs, programming changes, and commissioning plans to ensure alignment with enterprise standards.

  • ESG Infrastructure & Compliance
    • Own facilities-related ESG initiatives and supporting infrastructure, including energy efficiency programs, waste reduction and recycling systems, asset life-extension strategies, and environmentally responsible maintenance practices.
    • Partner with Safety, Finance, and Engineering teams to support environmental data collection, verification, audits, and reporting tied to corporate sustainability commitments.
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental regulations, fire/life safety codes, building codes, and internal governance standards across all sites.
    • Establish ESG and compliance expectations for vendors and contractors, including safety performance, regulatory adherence, and sustainability requirements.

  • Operational Continuity, Risk, & Vendor Management
    • Develop and maintain disaster recovery, business continuity, and emergency response plans for critical facility and automation systems.
    • Lead escalation and cross-functional incident response for major outages, compliance events, or safety incidents; ensure post-incident reviews drive systemic improvements.
    • Own strategic vendor relationships and service contracts for MHE, automation, HVAC, fire/life safety, and specialty services, including performance management and compliance monitoring.

  • Operational & Capital Budget Management
    • Own and be accountable for maintenance and facilities OPEX and CAPEX budgets across assigned sites, including capital repair planning, ESG-driven investments, and lifecycle ROI analysis.
    • Track and report operational, financial, compliance, and ESG (e.g. landfill diversion) performance metrics to executive leadership, highlighting risks, trends, and improvement opportunities.
