Library Assistant – Cranbrook Schools

Cranbrook Upper School is seeking a Library Assistant. This position provides paraprofessional and clerical support in the School Libraries and is responsible for day-to-day maintenance and oversight within the upper school library. This is a front-facing customer service position that regularly and directly works with adults and teenagers. As the primary point of contact for patrons, it is essential for this person to regularly demonstrate patience, punctuality, flexibility and enthusiasm. This is a full-time position working during the academic year from mid-August to mid-June.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • In this student/FSA-facing role, the library assistant provides student supervision and support for technology and library resources while maintaining the physical library environment.
  • Works with US Head Librarian to determine priorities for project-based work as needed.

Facility Management

  • Oversees the day-to-day operation of the library, including supervision of students and maintenance of cleanliness and order in the physical space.
  • Ensures library spaces and student behavior are appropriate for academic study.
  • Manages circulation of collection including day-to-day check in and out of materials and shelving of materials.
  • Maintains reservations and schedule for library facilities, classes and outside use.
  • Pulls and routes materials for intercampus use and distribution.
  • Assists with library correspondence including overdue notices to faculty, staff, and students and letters and billing of student accounts.
  • Maintains and updates Library Administration Manual.
  • Maintains facility during librarian’s absence.

Technology Support

  • Assists students and faculty in troubleshooting IT related issues including internet access, campus printing, resource logins, and Microsoft365 programs when using personal devices.
  • Assists in managing and maintaining support for personal or school devices and serves as a liaison between library team and IT personnel/Schools’ Technology Department.
  • Assists with the design and implementation of tutorials to assist students and faculty with common troubleshooting IT problems.
  • Maintains circulation of audio-visual equipment and loaner laptops for students. 
  • Maintains records, supplies, and manages service for library copy machine, computers and printers.
  • Helps maintain designated library pages using LibGuides and Sirsi Enterprise.

    Program Support

    • Creates annotated lists of new acquisitions / thematic resources for faculty and student use.
    • Promotes library resources and events through print and digital documentation / how-to’s / marketing materials as needed.
    • Assists in maintaining new and replacement materials as well as processing of materials into the schools' collections.
    • Works with other library staff members to maintain collection records.
    • Performs biennial inventory under the direction of the Head Librarian and prepares reports of missing materials.
    • Provides input for long-range planning of program and facility management.
    • Maintains a working knowledge of all subscription research databases available to the CKUS community.
    • The library assistant will also be responsible for collaborating with other members of the library team to create physical and virtual resource guides, process materials, and coordinate management of the collection.

     Requirements:

    • A High School Diploma or GED is required.
    • Academic library or school library experience as well as an interest in young adult literature preferred, but not essential.
    • A working knowledge of research/ searching skills and strategies required.
    • Must be skilled with word processing and office programs (Microsoft Office preferred), and experienced with multiple internet browsers, digital devices and operating systems (Android, iOS, Mac, Windows).
    • Familiarity with OPACS (Sirsi Enterprise, Horizon), LibGuides, Microsoft Teams, current research strategies (including Library databases), and the Dewey Decimal System is ideal.
    • Strong customer service skills are essential.
