Rehab Engineer Manufacturing / Machinist Intern

Position Summary:

In conjunction with all clinical departments and physicians, the Rehabilitation Engineering Manufacturing/Machinist Intern will work alongside the Rehabilitation Engineers to assist in the design, development, documentation, and production of machined parts, fixtures, tooling, and manufacturing process improvements. 
This position focuses primarily on machining and manufacturing operations, including but not limited to manual and CNC milling, turning (lathe), drilling, tapping, assembly, and general shop support. The intern will support ongoing production needs, prototype development, equipment setup, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance manufacturing efficiency, quality, safety, and throughput. 
 This position is a temporary internship. 

Position Requirements:

• Licensure/Certification/Registrations: None – but machining, manufacturing, and CAD certifications are a plus. 
• Education: Junior or Senior-level university or technical college student in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Machining Technology, CNC Technology, or related field. New graduates from relevant programs may also be considered.
• Experience: CAD/CAM experience (Fusion 360, SolidWorks CAM, MasterCAM, etc.). Hands-on machining or machine shop manufacturing practices. Experience with mills, lathes, drill press, band saws, or CNC machines.
• Skills & Abilities: Strong mechanical aptitude and proficiency with machine tools and shop equipment. Understanding of machining principles, feeds/speeds, tolerances, and blueprint reading.  Ability to follow safety protocols, quality standards, and documented procedures. Strong communication and teamwork skills. High attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship. Ability to problem-solve, think critically, and adapt to changing priorities. 

Essential Functions:

•  Learn and support core functions of the manufacturing engineering department. 
• Operate manual and/or CNC machining equipment under supervision. 
• Assist with fabrication of components, fixturing, and tooling used for production. 
• CAD new design for equipment and tooling; generate technical drawings; build tooling for assembly and manufacturing processes. 
• Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and 3D models. 
• Use measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, and gauges to ensure accuracy of manufactured components. 
• Follow established machining procedures, safety guidelines, and quality standards. 
• Assist in setup, debugging, and optimization of machining operations. 
• Participate in process improvement initiatives, including documentation of standard work instructions. 
• Support corrective actions and root-cause investigations related to manufacturing issues. 
• Assemble prototypes or mechanical systems as needed for testing or evaluation. 
• Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, including machining notes, measurements, and revisions. 
• Maintain a clean and organized machine shop environment.

Salary Range: $18.50/ Hour — $26.64/ Hour
