About the Role:

The Surgical Technician plays a critical role in supporting surgical teams by preparing operating rooms and ensuring all necessary instruments and equipment are sterile and ready for use. This position requires meticulous attention to detail to maintain a sterile environment and assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments and supplies efficiently. The Surgical Technician collaborates closely with nurses, anesthesiologists, and surgeons to facilitate smooth surgical operations and patient safety. They are responsible for anticipating the needs of the surgical team and responding promptly to dynamic situations in the operating room. Ultimately, the role contributes significantly to positive surgical outcomes and the overall quality of patient care within healthcare facilities across the United States.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent education.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or eligibility to obtain certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sterile techniques and surgical instrumentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure environments such as operating rooms.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working as a Surgical Technician in a hospital or surgical center setting.
  • Advanced certifications such as Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA).
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and surgical documentation software.
  • Strong understanding of various surgical specialties and procedures.
  • Additional training in patient safety and infection control best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile drapes according to the specific procedure requirements.
  • Assist surgeons and surgical staff during operations by passing instruments, sponges, and other sterile supplies as needed.
  • Maintain strict adherence to aseptic techniques and infection control protocols to ensure a sterile environment.
  • Inspect and clean surgical instruments and equipment after procedures, ensuring proper sterilization and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with the surgical team to anticipate procedural needs and respond quickly to changes during surgery.
  • Document surgical procedures and maintain accurate records of instrument usage and sterilization processes.
  • Monitor inventory levels of surgical supplies and communicate restocking needs to appropriate personnel.

The Surgical Technician utilizes their knowledge of sterile techniques and surgical instruments daily to prepare the operating room and assist during procedures, ensuring patient safety and procedural efficiency. Strong communication skills are essential for coordinating with surgeons, nurses, and other team members to anticipate needs and respond to changes in real time. Time management and organizational skills help the technician maintain inventory and documentation accurately, supporting smooth surgical operations. Preferred skills such as familiarity with EMR systems enhance the technician's ability to document procedures and contribute to comprehensive patient care records.
