Job Summary
The Hand Weld & Robotic Weld Supervisor leads welding operations in a fast-paced sheet metal fabrication job shop environment. This role is responsible for managing both manual welding and robotic welding processes across a wide variety of custom and short-run jobs, ensuring quality, efficiency, and on-time delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Scheduling
- Supervise, train, and support hand welders and robotic welding operators
- Coordinate daily work assignments based on job priorities, due dates, and workload
- Adjust staffing and resources to meet changing production demands
Welding Operations (High-Mix / Low-Volume)
- Oversee manual welding of sheet metal components (MIG and TIG, thin-gauge materials)
- Manage robotic welding cells, including setup, changeovers, and programming edits
- Ensure proper fixturing and setup for repeatability and accuracy
Blueprint & Custom Work Execution
- Interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and customer specifications
- Collaborate with engineering and fabrication teams to resolve fit-up issues
- Support prototype and first-run jobs
Quality Assurance
- Ensure welds meet customer requirements and cosmetic standards
- Perform in-process and final inspections
- Identify root causes of defects and implement corrective actions
Production Efficiency
- Monitor workflow and reduce bottlenecks
- Improve setup times and welding processes
- Track metrics such as throughput, rework, and on-time delivery
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce welding and fabrication safety standards
- Ensure proper PPE usage
- Maintain compliance with OSHA and company policies
Equipment & Maintenance
- Oversee maintenance of welding equipment and robotic systems
- Coordinate repairs and preventive maintenance
- Ensure proper calibration for thin-gauge materials
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- 5 years of welding experience in sheet metal fabrication
- 2 years of supervisory experience preferred
- Job shop or custom fabrication experience strongly preferred
Technical Skills
- Strong MIG and TIG welding on thin-gauge materials
- Experience with robotic welding systems.
- Ability to read blueprints and weld symbols
- Knowledge of fixturing, tolerances, and distortion control
