3(16) Consultant (100% Remote)
We are seeking a skilled 3(16) Consultant to join a growing retirement services team. This role blends technical expertise with client facing leadership and is ideal for professionals who enjoy taking ownership of client relationships while guiding internal teams.
Responsibilities
Client Leadership
- Serve as the primary relationship owner for an assigned book of 3(16) defined contribution plans.
- Lead client meetings, 3(16) fiduciary discussions, and plan reviews.
- Communicate regularly with clients, advisors, and recordkeepers to ensure satisfaction and retention.
- Identify risks or service gaps and proactively address issues.
- Review annual plan valuations, plan documents, and operational data.
- Review and analyze compliance and non discrimination testing (401(a)(4), 410(b), 414(s), 402(g), 415, etc.).
- Review IRS Form 5500 filings and related documentation.
- Approve plan loans, distributions, and hardships.
- Ensure all regulatory deadlines, notices, and enrollment requirements are met.
- Participate in onboarding and plan conversions for new clients.
- Support plan sponsors during mergers and acquisitions.
- Lead a service pod, mentor administrators, and review work for accuracy and timeliness.
- Provide guidance on priorities, workflow, and client deliverables.
- Collaborate with compliance leadership to strengthen processes and scalable service models.
- Contribute to internal procedure documentation, checklists, and training materials.
Required
- 7-10 years of defined contribution plan administration or 3(16) compliance experience.
- Understanding of 3(16) fiduciary responsibilities and ERISA rules.
- Experience training or mentoring team members.
- Familiarity with tools such as PensionPro, recordkeeping systems, and plan document platforms.
- Strong communication, organization, and follow through skills.
- Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion.
- Previous leadership within a client service pod or team environment.
