Position Summary
The Engineering Associate position holds the responsibility for the safe, reliable, and economic round-the-clock operation of the generation, electric transmission, and distribution systems. Duties include Engineering responsibilities for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation activities of our power plants, transmission lines, substations, distribution system, gas systems, control centers and others. These Engineering duties may include continuous monitoring and balancing of energy flow and responding to system disturbances, along with all generation, distribution, and transmission activities that provide electric and gas services to customers.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Design protective relay systems for transmission, substation, and distribution systems including the specification and selection of protective relays, current transformers, communications equipment, and associated equipment for construction projects
- Create engineering Design Packages
- Create relay one-line drawings
- Perform short circuit studies, fault calculations, and relay coordination studies
- Provide settings for microprocessor, solid state, electromechanical relays and electronic reclosers
- Develop protective relay settings
- Analyze transmission, substation, and distribution protection system operations
- Perform breaker rating studies and recommend breaker replacements
- Develop and review material specifications for protection related equipment
- Research and study new protective relay technologies and related equipment
- Review and approve substation schematic drawings
- Review and approve distributed generation (DG) installations
- Model transmission, substation, and generation equipment for ERCOT short circuit case creation
- Participate in ERCOT activities, including travel to various ERCOT meetings and training seminars
- Develop and update database applications
- Monitor and assess NERC reliability standards
- Develop NERC compliance related procedures
- Perform NERC compliance related activities
- Develop auditable documentation for NERC compliance
- Reviews ERCOT EPS Metering protocols
- Creates EPS Metering design proposals

Preferred Qualifications
- Broad knowledge of other related areas and how they influence operational/tactical aspects
- Experience with Computer Aided-Drafting systems and Bentley Microstation software
- Experience with ESRI GIS software and Arc FM Designer software
- Experience with SAP and Work Manager software
