Job Summary:
The Assistant Athletic Trainer reports to the Head Athletic Trainer and will assist with all aspects of the athletic training program. This position is responsible for the care, prevention, and rehabilitation of injuries and/or illnesses to Cowley College athletes.
Position Duties:
- Therapy/treatment and game-day/practice times in gymnasium and additional locations for student-athlete care and prevention (ending times may vary depending upon needs).
- Attend Assigned sport/s home games and needed away games, coordinating with coaches the pre- and post-game needs.
- Assist in maintaining injury reports and forms.
- Assist with the coordination of Pre-Participation Evaluations (PPE) and injuries of athletes with the appropriate medical staff.
- Assist with coordinating necessary aspects of the athletic training program with all coaches.
- Assist with the ordering, dispensing, and inventory of athletic training room supplies and equipment.
- First responder for athlete injuries during assigned practices and games. Provide initial evaluation and assessment of injury, coordinate treatment, and respond to emergencies.
- Provide appropriate education to athletes, including but not limited to dietary issues, hygiene, and exercise.
- Instruct athletes in injury prevention, including, but not limited to, observing the playing area and the use of correct equipment.
- Safety Control: manage weather situations, game control, monitor heat index
- Assist with the coordination of the athletic drug testing program, including, but not limited to, administering tests and maintaining records.
- Assist with managing the Student Athlete insurance plan, including, but not limited to, processing claims, injury reports, communication with appropriate medical facilities, and coordinating invoices and EOB’s with primary insurance carriers.
- Maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and/or any other representatives of external organizations.
- Comply with all College policies and procedures
- Assist the Head Athletic Trainer by performing other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of sports medicine.
- Knowledge of general operations, organization, and management of an athletic training room.
- Knowledge of insurance forms and procedures for reporting athletic injuries.
- Must possess accurate record-keeping skills.
- Must possess a positive attitude towards students and understand their social and personal development needs.
- Demonstrate an ability to supervise and positively motivate student athletes and athletic training students.
- Must have the ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
- Must have the ability to remain calm in tense situations and effectively deal with confrontational situations.
- Ability to work independently, as well as on a team.
- Ability to work and maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
- Good communication skills, both written and spoken.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work. Work well under deadline pressures.
- Excellent human relations skills. Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and diverse populations.

Required Education:
- Master’s degree (Preferred).
- Bachelor’s degree with a major course of study in athletic training (or Post-baccalaureate Degree equivalent).
- NATABOC certification.
- KSBHA licensure (must be obtained within the specified time limit).
- Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) Certification.
Required Experience:
- Minimum Athletic training experience as required for NATABOC certification and KSBHA licensure.
- Experience working with student populations, preferred.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to traverse stairs; Ability to maintain physical mobility and composure and to assist with physical student activity; Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; ability to move freely around the campus and outreach centers; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; ability to bend, stoop, reach and grasp as required to perform responsibilities; ability to drive motor vehicle; and ability to work on the computer for long periods of time.
Work Environment:
Work performed in gym area, indoor facility, athletic training rooms, and outdoor facilities.
