Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator III

Job Summary: The Heavy Equipment Operator III will participate in the work of the assigned crew that supports the efficient operations of the Authority’s water and sewer systems. The Heavy Equipment Operator III is responsible for operating heavy equipment in support of the construction, maintenance, and repair of the Authority’s water and sewer systems.

Supervision: Reports to the Crew Foreman, Construction Superintendent, and Construction Manager

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Major Duties:

• Complete daily work orders, submitting them promptly.
• Inspect and verify that the materials loaded into the vehicle are adequate to complete the daily assignment.
• Adhere to Company Safety Standards and promote safety culture among crew members, including the proper use of machinery and equipment, and resolve problems when they arise.
• Relates to the public and to customers in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner, appropriately responding to their complaints.
• Operates equipment and trucks in the street, around utilities, and in other tight places requiring care and skill.
• Operates and performs daily general inspection of maintenance for a variety of medium and large equipment, such as a backhoe, dump trucks, rubber tire loaders, skid steer loaders, right of way mowers, and similar motorized vehicles.
• Repairs landscaping and water leaks.
• Installs water meters, meter vaults, decentralized systems, and water/sewer lines.
• Able to effectively operate at least one type of the Authority’s equipment, including but not limited to equipment haulers, trailers, and specialized vehicles.
• Establish safe work zones, including traffic control devices; flag traffic as needed.
• Maintain a Competent Person, Confined Space, and Flagger certifications.
• Required to be on call. May be required to work nights, weekends, or holidays as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of Water and Sewerage Authority standards and practices.
• Knowledge of water system construction principles, practices, and materials.
• Knowledge of equipment maintenance and operation.
• Familiarity with the tools, machines, and equipment used in the workplace.
• Knowledge of company safety policies, applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, and other industry standards.
• Ability to conduct training.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints.
• Ability to obtain a Class A CDL within one year of hire date.
• Must demonstrate good communication and interaction skills.
• Must have the ability to be proactive and troubleshoot.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• One to two years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class A CDL driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain various industry licenses as required by the Authority.

Physical Requirements:

• Work is performed within the field, while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather.
• Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
• Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of the job site in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
• The employee must occasionally lift and be able to move objects of up to fifty pounds; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, in various environmental conditions.
