Job Description

The Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians is pleased to announce an opening for a dynamic and dedicated Lateral Police Officer. This full-time position is an excellent opportunity for an experienced law enforcement professional looking to further their career in a supportive and culturally rich environment. Please note that this position is based on-site and is not a remote job opportunity.

The selected candidate will join our Tribal Police Department, where we enforce Tribal, State, and Federal laws within our jurisdiction. Our department is committed to maintaining public safety, reducing crime, and fostering a safe environment through community policing and respect for all individuals’ cultural and legal rights.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares and disseminates various reports, logging incidents and activities in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Investigates crimes involving tribal, state, and federal law, collecting evidence and conducting interviews as necessary.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, assessing situations and implementing appropriate procedures for handling crises.
  • Enforces laws by making arrests, issuing citations, and conducting patrols within the community.
  • Participates in community outreach programs to advocate for public safety and community relations.
  • Attends and gives credible testimony in court regarding criminal cases.
  • Investigates traffic incidents and enforces traffic laws to ensure road safety.
  • Conducts narcotics investigations and gathers intelligence on illegal activities.
  • Maintains professionalism, integrity, and a high standard of ethical behavior both in and out of uniform.
  • Trains and provides guidance to peers and new recruits in law enforcement procedures.
  • Participates in continuous training to enhance job skills and stay updated on best practices in law enforcement.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school; an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Minimum age of 21 with no felony convictions.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Meets the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) physical and medical standards necessary for certification as a police officer.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a basic police certificate (DPSST) following successful completion of police academy and field training.
  • Proficient use of computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable tribal, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Successful completion of a thorough background investigation as determined by the employer.
  • Possess a current and valid Oregon Driver’s License and the ability to qualify for the Drivers Program.
