Position Summary
The Engineering Assistant (Non-Certified) supports the County Engineer and Road Department by assisting with surveying activities, construction inspection, and project quantity calculations related to county road and infrastructure projects. The position involves both field and office work and plays a key role in collecting data, supporting construction oversight, and assisting with engineering-related documentation and project estimates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of the work performed in this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive.
- Assist with field surveying activities, including serving as a rod man on a survey crew.
- Support the County Engineer in conducting surveys related to road construction, drainage improvements, and other county infrastructure projects.
- Assist with inspection of road construction and maintenance projects to ensure compliance with county standards and specifications.
- Collect, measure, and record field data related to engineering and road construction projects.
- Assist with calculating estimated quantities for construction materials and project planning.
- Operate and maintain basic surveying equipment and field tools.
- Assist with preparation of reports, documentation, and project information as directed by the County Engineer.
- Support engineering staff with project monitoring and progress documentation.
- Perform general field support duties associated with road department and engineering operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the County Engineer.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of or ability to obtain basic surveying skills.
- Experience in road construction inspection preferred.
- Experience working as a rod man on a survey crew preferred.
- Ability to calculate estimated quantities for construction projects.
- Ability to successfully complete a minimum standards test administered by the County Engineer.
- Valid Alabama Driver’s License required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic understanding of surveying methods and field procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, plans, and specifications.
- Ability to perform basic construction quantity calculations.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
- Ability to walk uneven terrain and construction sites.
- Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment and materials.
- Ability to stand, bend, and perform physical labor when necessary.
Work Environment
This position involves a combination of fieldwork and limited office work. Work is frequently performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and around construction equipment, roadways, and active project sites.
Pay: $15.27 - $26.30 per hour
