What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Financial Advisor position at Covenant Wealth Advisors?
Firm Overview
Founded in 2010, Covenant Wealth Advisors is an award‑winning, independent, fee‑only wealth management firm with offices in Richmond, Reston, and Williamsburg, VA. We specialize in helping individuals age 50 plan for and enjoy retirement by integrating investment management, retirement planning, and tax planning into one coordinated strategy.
We are fiduciary, fee‑only advisors – no commissions, no product sales – serving clients across Virginia and the United States. Our team manages over $890 million in assets (as of 12/04/2025) with a culture built on integrity, excellence, and genuine care for clients and each other.
The Opportunity
The Associate Financial Advisor (AFA) role is an opportunity to work side‑by‑side with a Senior Financial Advisor on a planning‑centric, award‑winning advisory team. You’ll help deliver deep retirement, investment, tax, risk management, and estate planning advice to a select group of clients – without being responsible for prospecting or bringing in new business.
This position is part of a structured career track to become a Lead Financial Advisor at Covenant Wealth Advisors.
No cold-calling. No product quotas. A clear path to Lead Advisor.
What You'll Do
You’ll be a key member of the client advisory and planning team, responsible for ensuring meetings are well‑prepared, follow‑ups are executed flawlessly, and clients feel cared for and informed.
Client Meeting & Planning Support
- Partner with a Senior Financial Advisor to prepare for all client review meetings (data gathering, analysis, and materials).
- Attend all client meetings; document key conversations, decisions, and follow‑up tasks.
- Draft and send thorough post‑meeting recap emails and task lists so nothing falls through the cracks.
- Build, update, and present financial and tax plans using MoneyGuide Elite, Tamarac, and Holistiplan.
- Help develop and maintain personalized Investment Policy Statements and holistic investment strategies for clients.
Client Relationship Management & Service
- Act as a day‑to‑day resource for client questions and service needs, in collaboration with the Senior Advisor and Client Service team.
- Maintain accurate, detailed records of all client communication and data within our CRM (Wealthbox).
- Coordinate onboarding of new clients and ensure a smooth transition into the firm.
- Proactively track open items and follow through until completion.
Investments, Trading, and Implementation
- Develop a mastery of Covenant’s evidence‑based investment philosophy.
- Assist in determining appropriate asset allocations based on each client’s goals, time horizon, and risk capacity.
- Partner with the Portfolio Trading team to approve and execute trades, implement portfolio changes, and support tax‑loss harvesting and rebalancing.
- Ensure that client portfolios remain aligned with their Investment Policy Statement and broader planning goals.
Process & Firm Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve planning, service, and operational processes and help implement those improvements.
- Contribute to a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and high standards of client care.
Some in‑person meetings and occasional travel between our office locations may be required.
