Overview
The Surgical Services Medical Assistant is responsible for registering patients on arrival, room assignments, gathering data, making next day charts, and for a variety of clinical and supportive tasks and provides basic patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse. This individual ensures that all practices are followed to maintain excellent records for all cases booked. The Surgical Services Medical Assistant demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
Responsibilities

The Ambulatory CCMA has clinical contact with patients when assigned to the desk and helps with hands-on patient care when assigned to assist RNs with patient care.
Use excellent customer service skills to greet and service patients.
Moves outpatients through the registration/ordering process in a timely, professional manner.
Assist patients in the completion of hospital forms.
Prepare charts for the technical staff.
Clean rooms, carts and equipment.
Navigates downtime process for Ambulatory Department.
Performs vital signs, measures height, weight, and other data as requested.
Ambulates, transports and positions patients with proper body mechanics, applying or utilizing special equipment as necessary.
Collects urine specimens, measures Foley and wound drainage output as needed per RN direction Changes unoccupied beds, cleans rooms, performs dressing and gowning and skin care.
Assists patients with presurgical wipes, clips hair preoperatively, cleans carts and rooms between patients.
Maintains paperwork/documentation according to established protocols.
Answers the telephone, using established telephone etiquette skills. Transfers phone inquiries appropriately. Faxes reports, using established protocols.

Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High School graduate.
Completion of Nurse Aide, Medical Assistant or Home Health Aide training program
Medical Terminology experience in Surgical Services
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Technical knowledge with Microsoft.
Strong knowledge of scheduling and OR routines Current knowledge of physician privileges. Strong oral and writing communication skills. Strong organization skills with attention to detail and highly motivated and self-directed. Ability to work independently and as a team. Ability to communicate positively with customers. Demonstrates sound judgment in difficult/sensitive situations. Consistently demonstrates confidentiality and adherence to HIPPA guidelines.
Must be able to sit and type for long periods of time. Must be able to work well with the public and able to be tactful in often hectic and stressful situations. Must be able to use the telephone for long periods of time.
Communicates with patients and families in a professional, therapeutic, and courteous manner. Demonstrates excellent customer service. Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit function and maintains patient rights and confidentiality and actively supports risk management activities.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Ability to maintain punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
