About Covelop, Inc.

Founded in 2003, Covelop, Inc. is an all-inclusive real estate development company managing the entire life cycle of the development process — from acquisition to disposition — across California’s Central Coast and beyond. With nearly two decades of local knowledge and relationships, we’ve built a reputation for high ethical standards, community involvement, and projects that create positive social and environmental impacts. Our portfolio spans hospitality, property management, and real estate development. We’re proud to be deeply rooted in San Luis Obispo County and actively involved in the community that has supported our growth.

Position Summary

The Controller is the financial backbone of Covelop, Inc., overseeing accounting operations across our portfolio of business entities. This is a hands-on, build-oriented role — not all processes and reporting structures are fully established, and a significant part of this role is helping create and implement them. You’ll work closely with ownership and senior leadership, have significant visibility into all aspects of the business, and oversee bookkeeping staff as the team develops.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger across all entities
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly and quarterly financial statements
  • Manage the month-end close process; coordinate with external CPA firm on year-end and tax filings
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure proper inter-entity allocations and eliminations
  • Oversee and support bookkeeping staff across the portfolio

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Develop financial forecasts and provide variance analysis against budget and prior periods
  • Provide cash flow projections and monitor liquidity across entities

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with federal, California state, and local tax and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain and improve internal controls to safeguard company assets
  • Coordinate with external CPA firm for annual tax preparation, audits, or reviews
  • Manage business licenses, property tax filings, and other regulatory obligations
  • Manage insurance policies, renewals, audits, and compliance across all entities

Systems & Operations

  • Serve as primary user and administrator of Sage Intacct; recommend and implement improvements to financial systems and processes
  • Support leadership with financial analysis for new projects, acquisitions, and strategic decisions
  • Serve as a secondary point of contact for lenders and outside advisors, coordinating with senior leadership as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including 2 years in a controller or senior accounting role
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge (GAAP) and financial reporting skills
  • Experience managing accounting across multiple entities or business lines
  • Proficiency with Sage Intacct (preferred) and/or QuickBooks; advanced Excel skills
  • High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort presenting financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • Comfortable stepping into a role where systems and processes are still being built — a builder mindset is essential

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in real estate, property management, hospitality, or a multi-entity operating company
  • Familiarity with construction or development project accounting
  • Knowledge of California-specific tax and employment compliance
  • CPA or tax accounting background a plus
