We are seeking a versatile and highly skilled Welder / Custom Fabricator to join our fast-paced job shop. Unlike a mass-production assembly line, our shop thrives on variety, custom low-volume runs, quick-turn repairs, and precision prototyping. The ideal candidate is a self-reliant problem solver who can look at an engineering drawing or blueprint and determine the best path forward, and execute high-quality welds. You will work closely with our machinists and engineers to deliver complete, precision assemblies.

Primary Responsibilities

• Multi-Process Welding: Perform high-quality MIG (30%) and TIG (70%) welding on a variety of materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
• Blueprint/Drawing Interpretation: Read and accurately interpret complex blueprints, GD&T engineering drawings, and welding symbols to plan layouts and weld sequences.
• Material Preparation & Fitting: Measure, cut, grind, and bevel raw stock. Clamp, tack-weld, and fixture complex assemblies while compensating for thermal expansion and warp.
• Machinery & Repair Work: Repair broken customer components, heavy machinery, or build custom brackets, fixtures, and shop structural elements.
• Cross-Functional Shop Work: Safely operate general shop fabrication equipment including band saws, drill presses, plasma cutters, grinders, oxi-acetylene torch, cranes, and fork lift. Basic familiarity with manual mills and lathes is a major plus.
• Quality Assurance: Self-inspect all completed welds for penetration, defects, and overall dimensional accuracy before moving parts to post-machining or delivery.
• Shop Stewardship: Maintain welding gear, manage all consumables, and adhere strictly to all workplace safety guidelines.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of welding and metal fabrication experience, ideally within a job shop or custom manufacturing environment.
• Technical Skills: Proficient in out-of-position welding, strong math, geometry, and layout skills,
• Interpersonal Skills: Work with machinists’ and engineers (or independently) to create and use fixtures for fit-ups
• Tool Proficiency: Mastery of standard fabrication tools (calipers, squares, angle grinders, indicators, depth micrometer, and various clamping techniques).
• Adaptability: Ability to pivot quickly between entirely different tasks based on changing job priorities and a willingness to learn basics of CNC machining and run mills and lathes during occasional slow periods for the weld department.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to lift up to 75 lbs., stand for long periods, and work comfortably in tight spaces or awkward angles.

Desired Skills

• Pulse TIG experience ideal
• Experience with braising cast iron and cast aluminum
• Experience with purging
