Reports to: Crisis Stabilizer Manager

The Courage House Crisis Stabilizer is an on-call position responsible for de-escalating, evaluating, and providing support during crises at Courage Group Home and C2 Apartments Each Crisis Stabilizer is responsible for leading at least one to two therapeutic group(s) or activity(ies) per month, and be on call for 1-5 on-call shifts/week. We are seeking Crisis Stabilizers with strong de-escalation skills, who will model a trauma-informed approach, committed to making a positive impact in the lives of LGBTQ youth.

Hours:

On-call shifts are from 5pm-12am each day, and 9am-5pm/5pm-12am on weekends. Crisis stabilizers can work 1-5 on-call shifts/week.

This is a non-exempt, part-time position.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and lead at least one-two therapeutic group(s) or activity(ies) per month dependent on the amount of residents in the house.
  • Be on-call to respond to mental health crises at Courage House during designated hours. May provide guidance to staff via phone or text, talk with residents via phone, or come into Courage House to provide on-site assistance.
  • Safety plan with residents.
  • Deescalate volatile situations.
  • Call outside agencies for additional support, such as external crisis teams, social workers, Milwaukee Mobile Crisis Team, and Law Enforcement as needed.
  • Document interventions for Courage House staff and outside agencies.
  • After Crisis Intervention, follow up and debrief with staff on duty the next day to provide recommendations on strategies for crisis prevention. Check on staff and give suggestions for future incidents.
  • Notify Director of Programs and Crisis Stabilizer Manager as needed
  • Provide ongoing training and guidance to Residential Care Workers (RCWs) on crisis prevention, safety planning, and trauma-informed care.
  • Serve as a positive mentor for youth living in Courage House.
  • Interact with youth in a positive and therapeutic manner according to policy, procedure, training, and agency values.
  • Maintain confidentiality within all written and verbal communications
  • Participate in ongoing training and staff meetings.
  • Completes all other training and professional duties as assigned to your manager.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree-in the fields of Social Work, Sociology, Special Education, Psychology, Counseling and Guidance or Criminal Justice- with experience, preferred. Experience in a group home, residential treatment center or hospital setting is strongly preferred. Master’s Level Training and Experience will be compensated. Must be at least 21 years of age. Background check, professional references, physical, and TB test required.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is subject to sitting, walking, and standing for prolonged periods; frequently pushes, pulls, grasps, kneels, crouches, or crawls. The employee frequently is required to use manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination when working with persons served and handling office, medical, or household equipment. The employee is subject to assist and lifts up to 50 pounds with varying amounts of assistance on a recurring basis. The employee is required to have corrected vision and hearing within normal range and the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Must have the ability to perform CPR.

Occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious substances, including communicable diseases when performing personal care. Occasional exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants. Residential work environment with a noise level of normal to loud. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully the essential functions of this job. Crisis Stabilizers will be paid for both on-call work and time worked onsite, although at different rates.
