General Responsibilities: The physical therapist provides collaborative therapy services to eligible students to minimize the effect of the handicapping condition upon the student’s ability to function in the classroom/educational setting. The therapist evaluates, selects and interprets therapeutic procedures and techniques; modifies and fabricates assistive/adaptive equipment; provides suggestions for environmental adaptation and positioning, provides consultation regarding the influence of specific deficits on the students behavior; and provides hands-on intervention as outlined in the student’s IEP.

Specific Responsibilities and Duties:  The physical therapist:

  • Administers standardized and functional assessments, and screens students with parental authorization to determine need for therapy assessment and/or services.

  • Interprets assessment results with regard to educational relevance of therapeutic intervention.

  • Plans procedures, therapeutic activities, exercises and techniques to be implemented into the student’s school program, including those designed to strengthen muscles, prevent deformity, develop fine and gross motor skills, improve mobility, develop self care skills, develop perceptual motor skills, and improve use of extremities. 

  • Designs/constructs/locates appropriate assistive technology, adaptive equipment and devices which may enable or enhance the student’s classroom/educational performance.

  • Consults with student’s physician regarding assessment results and program goals and obtains current prescription(s) as needed. 

  • Coordinates program goals with other special education services. Consults as needed with teachers, paraeducators, and others interested in the student’s school program; i.e. SLP’s, other therapists, teachers, therapy assistants, school psychologist, school nurse, physicians, medical agencies or other health professionals in implementing IEP goals and meeting student needs in the classroom/educational setting.

  • Provides classroom and home suggestions which are educationally relevant; reviews the effectiveness of such suggestions with program team members and trains teachers, paraeducators and parents in recommended programs for use in the classroom/educational setting, or home as needed.

  • Develops schedule for providing therapy to students, coordinating and communicating with school principals, teachers, and staff as needed concerning the best and most appropriate time and setting to work with individual students.

  • Maintains written records and submits reports for each student assessed/treated according to procedures developed by the special services director.

  • Orders and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.

  • Supervises certified therapy assistants, therapy aides, students in clinical or pre-clinical training from approved schools, volunteers, and assigned attendant personnel.

  • Participates in continuing education to ensure continued professional competence.

  • Accomplishes other duties as assigned and performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

Qualifications: The physical therapist must have:

  • Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate certificate as a licensed physical therapist.

  • Knowledge of applicable rules and regulations.

  • Ability to relate positively to and communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with students, parents, and staff.

  • Ability to manage the physical demands of the job including prolonged sitting or standing, occasional bending, lifting and otherwise changing position of students weighing up to 60 pounds.

  • Ability to observe student responses to therapeutic treatment and record and maintain files of assessment and treatment information.

  • A helpful, calm, friendly and polite manner when interacting with students, parents, and school staff.

  • Ability to make reasoned decisions.

  • Appropriate discretion concerning students, staff, and confidential or privileged information.
