Under direct supervision, provides a variety of support services to Human Services staff and clientele; and performs related work as assigned.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
 
Receives direct supervision from assigned supervisory or management staff.   Exercise no supervision of staff.
 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
 
This is a fully competent level class responsible for providing a wide variety of support services to professional and technical staff, and clientele in community health programs. This class is distinguished from the Health Technician class series in that the latter exercise greater discretion in the performance of their duties, and require more specialized knowledge of specific program areas.(Illustrative Only)

  • Learns general public health programs and available community resources in order to acquaint community residents with existing departmental programs; assists in explaining new programs and provides assistance to residents in utilizing available public health department services and other community resources; acts as an informational resource to program participants regarding services and activities offered.
  • Arranges transportation, escorts and may personally transport clients to scheduled appointments.
  • Acts as liaison with community residents; assists in identifying potential clients within the community who may benefit from services provided.
  • Documents and keeps records of visits and/or client interactions; maintain accurate inventory logs and client contact logs.
  • Confers with professional staff to assist in evaluating client needs.
  • Gathers data and prepares brief reports.
  • Attends appropriate staff and in-service meetings.
  • May perform routine clerical duties in connection with program requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
When assigned to WIC breastfeeding programs:
  • Counsels mothers on importance of breastfeeding, how to overcome common barriers and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
  • Provides breastfeeding education and support to eligible clients both in person and/or over the phone.
  • Teaches breastfeeding classes; train on the use, cleaning and assembly of breast pumps.
  • Participates in support group meetings.
  • Assist WIC staff in promoting programs and services through special projects and/or community outreach activities.
  • Provides appropriate referrals to other breastfeeding, nutrition, nursing or medical staff or resources.
  • Attends required trainings.
Knowledge of:
 
  • Problems, needs, attitudes and behavior patterns of community residents.
  • Available community resources.
  • Basic record keeping and report preparation techniques.
  • Basic medical terminology.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Gathering complete and accurate information from participants.
  • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation. 
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff.
 
Ability to:
 
  • Learn the regulations and procedures affecting assigned community health program.
  • Learn to interpret and apply eligibility requirements for participants.
  • Learn the health related resources within the community.
  • Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and specialized software applications programs.
  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and legal guidelines.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
 
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be

Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade 
 
Licenses and Certifications:
 
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
