Purpose of Position

The purpose of this position is to provide the maintenance and repair of all the Public Works Department light and heavy equipment and to assure their safe and proper operation.

Position Specific Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs mechanic repairs, including complete engine overhauls, adjustments and parts replacement on power, drive, brake, and steering, electrical, cooling and related systems on light and heavy equipment.
• Performs annual DOT inspections on heavy duty trucks and trailers to maintain certifications, complete repairs identified and document all actions needed and taken.
• Performs maintenance welding and cutting repairs.
• Performs inspection and diagnostic work on light and heavy equipment including computerized fuel ignition and brake systems.
• Maintain and clean county maintenance shop in orderly, efficient and safe manner, and make building repairs as assigned.
• Performs major and minor tune-ups and interprets automotive computer system data for repairs.
• Diagnoses and services air conditioning systems.
• Requisitions parts and supplies.
• Performs general mechanical servicing on numerous county trucks, motor graders, dump trucks, snowplows, tractors, pickups, and various other highway maintenance related equipment.
• Performs equipment fabrication when necessary.
• Performs repair work in areas as hydraulic and airbrake systems, electrical systems tire repair and replacement, general tune-ups and maintenance, and vehicle exterior maintenance.
• Repairs bodywork and paints various types of automotive vehicles and equipment.
• Prepares new fleet for service. Provides input into new equipment specifications. Prepares county vehicles and equipment for sale or trade.
• Responds to emergency calls in the field.
• Operates snowplows and performs routine highway maintenance duties occasionally as directed.
• Provides input to supervisor on existing equipment issues, budget considerations and purchases.
• Attends work regularly and in a timely manner.
• Performs others duties as assigned or apparent.
• Must be available for seasonal and call out operations.

Minimum Education and Experience/Special Requirements

• Associates/Technical degree with coursework in diesel mechanics, or related field and considerable experience working with diesel mechanics, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• DOT truck inspection certificate.
• Air conditioning certificate.
• Valid Class A commercial driver's license in the State of Minnesota with air brake endorsement.
• Must pass a criminal background check.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to read a variety of documents including maps, vehicle maintenance manuals, policy manuals, sign manuals, and related guides, parts and electrical diagrams.
• Ability to demonstrate mechanical knowledge and the knowledge and skill to implement mechanical repairs.
• Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add and subtract, multiply and divide totals, determine time and weight, and interpret same as may be appropriate.
• Ability to communicate with people to convey or exchange professional information.
• Ability to make independent judgments in the repair of equipment, must be familiar with all phases of mechanical repair and maintenance involving automobiles, light and heavy equipment.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 100 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking and sitting and occasionally requires standing and tasting or smelling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), wearing a breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
