Definition/Purpose
This is skilled work in the operation of large complex motorized equipment in construction and related highway, bridge and waterway maintenance activities. An employee in this class is responsible for the basic preventive maintenance to and the operation of equipment requiring highly skilled manipulation of the controls and attachments in maneuvering for safe and efficient special purpose operation. When not operating equipment, employee participates in a work crew of leads work crew activity or the work of other equipment operators. Works under general supervision on routine or repetitive assignments and under close supervision on special or unusual assignments.
Characteristic Work
Operates bulldozer and crawler-loader for clearing ground, establishing grade, backfilling and tree and stump removal. Operates various types of crane for loading and unloading materials and structures for deep ditching, and for dragline work and dredging. Drives tractor and pan for earthmoving. Operates tracked or rubber-tired excavators for ditching and to slope banks in canals and ditches. Operates back-hoe to cut deep ditches, set or dig out culverts and inlets, or to excavate roadways. Operates small, less complex equipment for short periods of time or in emergencies. Makes daily inspection of assigned equipment, performs preventive maintenance and reports major maintenance needs and mechanical malfunctions. Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to read and write. High School graduate preferred. Minimum of three (3) year’s experience in operating large, complex motorized heavy equipment of the type used by this department. A portion of the experience may be waived for the completion of an approved operator’s training school. A valid State of Ohio Commercial Drivers License. Considerable knowledge of and skill in the effective and safe operation of large complex motorized equipment in traffic and in and around work crew areas. Considerable knowledge of the component parts of such equipment, the performance limits, and the preventive maintenance necessary to keep equipment in satisfactory operation. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to effectively lead work crew activities.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
