Janitor I:

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to perform routine janitorial duties in County buildings; may perform non-routine janitorial work, as needed; keep assigned areas and County buildings in a clean and orderly condition; and do related duties, as assigned. This classification is a for cause, non-exempt position.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an entry level Janitor classification. Incumbents perform the full range of janitorial duties in cleaning County buildings and facilities. Incumbents assigned to this classification perform routine janitorial work, and may perform non-routine janitorial work as assigned. Work locations will vary and work assignments may include irregular hours. Work is performed under general guidance and supervision.

Janitor II:

DEFINITION

This classification is a for cause, non-exempt position.

This is the fully experienced working level in the Janitor class series. Incumbents assigned to this classification perform routine janitorial work and may perform non-routine janitorial work as assigned. Incumbents also provide lead direction, work coordination, and training to staff assigned to janitorial functions. Work locations will vary, and work assignments may include irregular hours.

CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISED

Receives general supervision from supervisory and/or management staff, depending on areas of work assignments. Provides lead direction, work coordination and training for janitorial staff.

Examples of Duties

Janitor I:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs a variety of cleaning duties such as but not limited to:

  • Sweeping
  • Mopping and scrubbing floors
  • Cleans and vacuums rugs and carpets
  • Waxes and polishes furniture and woodwork
  • Cleans hallways, lobbies, restrooms, and offices
  • Cleans ceilings, walls, blinds, and light fixtures
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles
  • Polishes metal work
  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms
  • Replenishes supplies
  • May wash windows
  • May move and arrange furniture and equipment
  • Turns out lights, set alarms, lock doors and windows, as needed
  • Operates scrubbers, buffers, waxing machines, and other equipment and machinery
  • Requisitions supplies as needed
  • Observes and reports needed repairs to buildings and equipment
  • Maintains equipment used during the course of work
  • Empty paper recycling containers
  • Replaces light bulbs and tubes
  • May assist with basic building maintenance work

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the scope of duties performed by employees in this class and are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

  • Provides lead direction, work coordination, and training to other staff performing janitorial functions.
  • Performs a variety of custodial work such as vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, waxing and buffing floors.
  • Operates scrubbers, buffers, waxing machines, and other equipment and machinery.
  • Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash.
  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms, including restocking restroom supplies.
  • Polishes brass fixtures.
  • Vacuums carpets.
  • Sweeps, mops, waxes, strips, and polishes floors.
  • Washes walls, woodwork and blinds.
  • Dusts and polishes all surfaces.
  • Washes windows and showcases.
  • Cleans finger marks and stains from counters, doors, trim, and walls.
  • Moves and arranges furniture, equipment, office supplies, and files, as needed.
  • Reports unusual or improper conditions and reports the need for extensive building and equipment repair.
  • Maintains equipment used during the course of work.
  • May turn out lights, set alarms, and lock doors and windows, as needed.
  • Provides training on safety methods, cleaning techniques, and the proper use of equipment to other janitorial staff.
  • May be assigned to inspect assigned buildings to ensure proper standards of cleanliness.
  • Empty paper recycling containers.
  • Replaces light bulbs and tubes.
  • May assist with basic building maintenance work.
  • Do related work as required.

Training And Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Previous work experience in janitorial or custodial work is desirable.
  • Additional directly related experience and/or education may be substituted.

Special Requirements:

  • Additional security clearance may be necessary for Janitors assigned to the Government Center, law enforcement offices or any office that contains confidential information.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.
  • Incumbents in this classification must pass a routine background check upon accepting an offer of employment and submit to a pre-employment physical examination, drug testing and fingerprinting.

Any Combination Of Training And Experience Which Would Likely Provide The Required Knowledge And Abilities Is Qualifying. A Typical Way To Obtain The Required Knowledge And Abilities Would Be:

  • One year of work work experience in janitorial or custodial work is desirable.

Siskiyou County Labor Contracts - OESC Miscellaneous unit

Holidays:

THESE BENEFITS DO NOT APPLY TO EXTRA HELP EMPLOYEES

12 paid holidays (96 hours) per year, plus 3 floating holidays

Vacation:

Two (2) weeks per year during the first five (5) years of service;

Three (3) weeks a year - five (5)- ten (10) years of service;

Four (4) weeks a year - Ten (10) plus years of service;.

Note - accrued vacation leave may not be used until after six months of employment.

Sick Leave:

Sick leave shall accrue from the date of initial employment at the rate of 3.7 hours per pay period (which is equivalent to 96 hours per years) for regular full-time employees with no maximum accrual. Unused sick leave may be converted to PERS service credit upon retirement.

Health Plan:

Siskiyou County contracts with CalPERS for medical insurance.

Effective 1/01/2024, the County will contribute 90% of the Region 1 CalPERS Gold health plan.

Effective 1/01/2025, the County will contribute 85% of the Region 1 CalPERS Gold health plan.

Dental Plan:

Effective 1/01/2024 the County contributes 90% of the dental premium.

Effective 1/01/2025 the County contributes 85% of the dental premium.

Vision Plan:

Effective November 2022 the County provides vision insurance for employees and their

dependents.

Life Insurance:

The County will maintain life insurance for $50,000.

Retirement:

The County is in the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security.

  • 2% at 55 years of age and single highest year calculation for final compensation (generally for employees hired prior to 11/02/12)
  • 2% at 60 years of age and highest three year average for final compensation (generally for employees hired between 11/02/12 - 12/31/12)
  • 2% at 62 years of age and highest three year average final compensation (generally for employees hired on or after 1/01/13)

Member contribution:

Employees hired prior to November 2, 2012, pay the required seven percent (7.0%) member contribution, on a pre-tax basis.

Employees hired after November 1, 2012, who are not classified as a new member pay the required seven percent (7.0%) member contribution, on a pre-tax basis.

Employees hired after December 31, 2012, who are classified as a new member will

pay one half of the total normal cost as determined annually by CalPERS on a pre-tax basis.

Miscellaneous:

  • Deferred Compensation plans available through specified companies.
  • IRC Section 125 plan available for pre-tax payroll deductions for contributions towards un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care.
