Description

Under general supervision, to operate survey instruments on a survey party, and gather and calculate survey data on a field engineering survey party.

Typical Tasks

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Sets up, adjusts, maintains, and operates level, total station, Global Position System (GPS), and other survey instruments to establish lines, angles, distances, and elevations for topographic, property and construction field engineering surveys;
  • Maintains records; checks data; and makes field calculations;
  • Interprets maps, drawings, and legal descriptions; makes field sketches as required;
  • Performs basic duties of a survey party crew such as clearing brush, determining and setting markers, and taking measurements;
  • May act as survey party chief under direction, or in the absence of the party chief;
  • Assists in training and supervising subordinate personnel;
  • Utilizes computer aided drafting and related survey data processing software to produce point files and drawings;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards

Education

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent;

and

Four (4) years of full-time engineering experience, which must have included two (2) years of field engineering survey work.

Field engineering experience includes but not limited to; performing procedures, drawings, methods, software and practices used in surveying work; operation and maintenance of survey equipment; safe working practices; mathematics including basic mathematical computations, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Possession of college units (30 semester or 45 quarterly) may substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis for a maximum of four years.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
  • *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100- 3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.

Knowledge Of

  • The principles of geometry and trigonometry;
  • Surveying instruments and techniques;
  • The principles and practices of Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) programs;
  • English usage, style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling;
  • Common computer systems and applications.

Ability To

  • Read and understand real property descriptions;
  • Accurately gather and record data;
  • Operate and maintain survey equipment;
  • Make accurate engineering computations;
  • Follow oral and written directions with a minimum of supervision;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
  • Use computer systems and applications.

Physical Requirements

  • May perform limited heavy manual labor such as digging, chopping and climbing;
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
