What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operating Room Technician/ Surgical Technician - Relief position at County of San Mateo?
Working side-by-side with surgeons and nurses, major surgical areas are represented, including orthopedics, general, gynecology, peripheral cardiovascular, renal, ophthalmology, plastic and neurosurgery. The service has a focus on providing for both Ambulatory and In-patient procedures. The team also rotates on-call responsibilities to support after hour cases from the Emergency Department.
The ideal candidate is a graduate of an accredited school of operating room or surgical technology, although 1-2 years of experience in an acute care operating room is preferred, new graduates will be considered.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Scrub, gown and glove self and other team members in preparation for surgical procedures.
- Participate in setting up sterile filed of an operating room prior to surgery, opening sterile packs and arranging instruments and supplies according to surgical procedures.
- Hand sterile instruments and surgical supplies to the surgeon during an operation.
- Count sponges, needles and instruments with Circulator.
- Receive specimens and cultures from Surgeon; pass to Circulator according to the direction of the Surgeon.
- Maintain sterile field for duration of procedure.
- Assist in cleaning and restocking operating rooms with sterile supplies.
- Assist with transfer of patient from OR table or bed.
- Dispose of or replace used materials appropriately.
- Care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Practice appropriate infection control and aseptic practice, and environmental safety practices.
- Train or precept others in the role.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Basic anatomy and physiology.
- Practices and techniques of asepsis and their application.
- Various types of instruments and surgical supplies that are used in surgical procedures.
- Understand the instructions of the medical and nursing staff and to carry them out precisely and quickly.
- Engage in continuous active work requiring long periods of standing and physical exertion.
- Exercise a reasonable amount of manual dexterity in the handling of instruments and surgical supplies.
- Work closely and effectively with members of the surgical team.
- Work effectively in emergency or tense situations and be alert to the needs of surgeons during surgery.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to qualify is:
Completion of an approved training program in the duties of an Operating Room Technician.
