In this dynamic role, you'll work independently and alongside the Community Development team to investigate code violations, educate the public, and help ensure that properties across the County meet local, state, and federal standards. Tasks and Duties You Will Do:

  • Investigate properties and enforce compliance with County codes and ordinances
  • Engage with residents, businesses, and landowners in a respectful and professional way
  • Maintain accurate case records and prepare detailed reports
  • Collaborate with various government agencies and represent the County in legal proceedings
  • Ensure proper land use and adherence to permits

  • A high school diploma or GED with two years of practical experience in a field like construction technology, public administration, engineering, or urban planning. Associate’s degree in construction technology, public administration, engineering, or urban planning preferred; or equivalent combination of education and work experience sufficient to perform the duties of the position.
  • Valid State of New Mexico Driver's license or able to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Work is performed in an office and in the field, requiring exposure to all weather conditions.
  • Duties may include walking, standing, bending, climbing, and entering properties that may be in unsafe or unsanitary conditions.
  • Requires occasional lifting of materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent contact with the public, including potentially confrontational situations, requiring calm and professional interaction.
  • Traveling in an automobile is a regular part of the job.
  • Work schedule for this position may include working on religious holidays.
  • Utilize, process, and navigate the County’s electronic ERP system as necessary and appropriate based on the needs and requirements of this position.
  • This position may be eligible for an alternative worksite arrangement, in accordance with County policy and at the discretion of the Department Head.
  • Conduct independent field inspections and investigations to determine compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. Issue notices of violation, citations, and follow-up actions as required.
  • Meet with landowners, residents, businesses, and the public to explain code requirements in a clear, professional, and non-confrontational manner to achieve voluntary compliance.
  • Interpret and enforce adopted codes, land use regulations, and related rules; review permit applications and conduct follow-up inspections to ensure work complies with approved permits.
  • Research and review property ownership, legal descriptions, maps, and related records to support enforcement actions.
  • Maintain accurate records, case files, and a database of complaints, violations, and resolutions.
  • Prepare detailed investigative reports, correspondence, and case documentation; consult with prosecutors and testify in court when necessary.
  • Review plans, permits, and operations to ensure compliance with County, State, and Federal regulations.
  • Serve as a point of contact for communication and coordination with property owners, residents, businesses, County staff, and outside regulatory agencies.
  • Provide professional assistance on routine administrative and technical matters related to code compliance and community development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Salary : $21 - $25
