Job Summary




The County of San Diego is currently accepting job applications for ACCOUNT CLERK SPECIALIST

The initial interviews will take place the week of January 19, 2026.
The department will be reaching out to candidates to invite them to participate in an interview.

Account Clerk Specialists perform the more difficult and complex clerical accounting tasks and serve as lead to subordinate staff performing clerical accounting duties. Duties include:
  • Compiles and records financial transactions.
  • Codes costs to proper distribution according to predetermined functional and organizational classifications.
  • Explains financial and assessment procedures and accounting requirements to employees and the public.
  • Audits budgetary classification of expenditure documents.
  • Assists in the preparation of periodic reports.
  • Prepares and maintains redemption tax records.
  • Gathers statistical data and prepares worksheets for budget estimates.
  • Prepares the pre-audit report of public funds for payment and warrant preparation.
  • Audits and distributes receipts and revenues to proper accounts.
  • Reviews and processes claims and invoices from contractors, suppliers, and/or service providers for payment.
  • Maintains accounts receivable subsidiary ledgers.
  • Utilizes data processing printouts and personal computers to perform clerical accounting duties.
  • Track and reconcile fixed asset and minor equipment inventory.

HIRING TIMELINE AND DATES

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins shortly after the interview.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years as an Account Clerk within the County of San Diego; OR,
  • Three (3) years or more of work experience performing responsible clerical accounting work, bookkeeping, fiscal, or statistical assignments; OR,
  • Completion of twelve (12) semester units from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in accounting; AND one (1) year of experience performing responsible clerical accounting work, bookkeeping, fiscal or statistical assignments.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.

EVALUATION


Qualified applicants will be placed on a nine (9) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental application questionnaire. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate, as the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.
