About The Position
The County of Riverside's TLMA Transportation Department is seeking to fill one Traffic Control Painter vacancy.
This position is based out of Riverside; however, the selected candidate may be required to report to various work locations throughout the County based on departmental needs.
The incumbent will play a key role in maintaining County roadways by painting, repairing, and prolonging street and highway markings, legends, bridges and guard rails. The selected candidate will also be responsible for locating, assembling and maintaining street signs throughout the County of Riverside. Additionally, Traffic Control Painters are tasked with maintaining paint spraying equipment, performing traffic control and interpreting signing and striping plans.
The Transportation Department seeks candidates with a background in roadway construction, traffic control, and reading engineering plans. The most competitive candidates will have experience operating and maintaining airless paint sprayers, working on or alongside active roadways, maintaining traffic signs, and traffic control experience. In addition, experience using the ESRI ArcGIS system, pavement marking stencil systems, and possession of a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) is highly desirable.
This position follows a 4/10 schedule: 6am - 4:30pm Monday - Thursday
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of application. A Commercial Class A or B California Driver's License is required within six months of hire.

The Transportation Department is responsible for planning, designing, funding, building, operating and maintaining all roads, bridges and transportation facilities within the unincorporated County territory.
Examples Of Essential Duties
Experience: One year of working as a helper in traffic painting or general road maintenance or construction work.
License: Possession of a Class C drivers license is required at the time of application, the incumbent will be required to drive a county vehicle to and from different locations daily. A Commercial Class A or B California Driver's License is required within six months of hire.
Knowledge of: The use and maintenance of painting equipment (e.g., spray guns, brushes, and striping machines); safety precautions to be observed in working on highways.
Ability to: Use spray guns, brushes, and striping machines skillfully; install and erect traffic signs and posts; follow oral and written directions; work cooperatively with others.
Physical requirements: The Traffic Control Painter primarily operates outdoors and is exposed to inclement weather, and other environmental conditions. The responsibilities require moving heavy materials, such as buckets of paint, thermoplastic material, bags of glass beads, or tools necessary to perform the job. etc. Candidates must be able to perform these duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
DOT Information
This position has been designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required.
Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.

- Assemble stencils for painting street signs and apply paint with brush or spray gun.
- Paint crosswalks, curbs, parking areas, warning signs, and lane marking on roads; operate striping machine on roads and apply glass beading; determine appropriate placement for street markings.
- Initiate appropriate traffic safety precautions, such as setting up warning signs, cones, and detours; install street signs and warning signs.
- Paint bridges, guard rails, and cattle guards; erect sign posts and barricades; conduct safety checks on vehicles before departing for job site; prepare equipment and materials; clean and maintain all painting and striping equipment.
- Report damage or indistinguishable signs and road markings to supervisor; maintain records of work completed, materials used, and maintenance schedule.
