Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Solid Waste Equipment Operator I, performs specialized skilled work in the operation of several types of motorized heavy equipment used in the transfer and compaction of refuse. This involves operating such heavy equipment as heavy trucks, tractors, compactors, loaders, graders, blowers, etc. The Solid Waste Equipment Operator I, manipulates such vehicles with considerable skill and constant attention to safety of operation. Performs minor preventative maintenance on equipment and performs various duties to assist department maintenance crews as well as exercises some independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks.

This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operate one or more types of motorized heavy equipment involved in the collection, compacting, disposal and depositing of refuse, recyclables and debris, and clearing and grading of land and include: heavy trucks, compactors, tractors, loader, excavators, dump trucks, rubber tire loaders, front end loaders, fork lifts, etc. Drive a tandem axle dump truck to haul dirt and equipment spread gravel
  • Perform preventative maintenance and related care of trucks and equipment, making minor repairs, as needed
  • Fuel and clean trucks and equipment; utilize steam cleaning equipment
  • Assist with minor maintenance and related care of trucks and equipment; check truck and equipment before and after operation; prepare trucks and equipment for scheduled maintenance
  • Perform general landscaping duties such as mowing the grass, trimming weeds, installing fencing, etc. as needed
  • Maintain a daily logbook for record of hauling and equipment maintenance record on all equipment used in operation
  • Assist in training new employees on the use of heavy equipment
  • Transport equipment from site to site
  • Remove snow from roads and parking lots
  • Police grounds and pick up litter and debris
  • Respond to emergency calls as required
  • Perform other related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience:
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of experience in operating heavy equipment
  • Experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
  • Certifications/Licenses:
  • Possession of an appropriate Commercial driver’s license (Class B) issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or be able to obtain within six (6) months of hire
  • Heavy Equipment Operation Certification (desirable)
  • Other: N/A

Special Qualifications

  • Acceptable driving record

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the operation and servicing of heavy trucks and equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation
  • Thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work
  • Ability to operate heavy automotive equipment
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions
  • Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens and County staff

Working Conditions and Disclaimer

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently sitting and occasionally requires, walking, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; worker is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and frequently working near moving mechanical parts; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).

Pay: $43,423.00 - $56,450.00 per year
