The Public Health Department promotes and supports the health of our entire community through varied programs ranging from control of communicable diseases and coordination of the response to health emergencies, individual case management, primary prevention of disease, and wellness promotion. Reporting to the Director of Public Health, the incumbent oversees all the departmental nursing staff and programs including nurses in Child Welfare, Immunization, Communicable Disease, MCAH, Medical Therapy Unit, and our Truckee Clinic. Within that realm, the incumbent’s responsibilities include:
- Planning, organizing and directing the development, implementation, and evaluation of our nursing programs.
- Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training and development of nursing staff.
- Oversee and help implement emergency preparedness and response activities for the nurse staff.
- Interpret policy provisions of county nursing programs for the public and personnel.
- Assisting in the preparation of required programmatic and financial documents relating to State and Federal grants.
- Assisting in evaluating pertinent State and local legislation while mitigating negative impacts on the health department’s programs.
Graduation from an accredited four-year college/university accredited by the National League of Nursing with a Bachelor’s degree in Science of Nursing is required. Possession of a Master’s degree in Public Health Nursing, Public Health, Nursing, Public Administration, or a closely related field is desirable. Five years of progressively responsible experience, three years of which must have been in a managerial or supervisory capacity, is also desirable.

Title 17, Section 1301 of the California Code of Regulations further mandates that: “public health nursing staff will be under the supervision of a Director of Public Health Nursing.”
