IMMEDIATE VACANICES:
Department of Planning -Temporary Full-Time
Directs and coordinates a comprehensive program of public planning for the County’s principal planning department or water resource planning for the County; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class involves overall responsibility for the direction and coordination of a comprehensive program of public planning for the County’s principal planning department or water resource planning for the County.(The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.)
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in business or public administration, urban or city planning, engineering, economics, sociology or a related field and six (6) years of professional work experience in planning or civil engineering, three (3) of which shall have been in an administrative capacity.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii, Type 3) may be required for specific positions.
Knowledge of: principles, practices and purpose of public planning; general research sources and sources of socioeconomic information; research, and statistical methods and techniques used in public planning; report writing; governmental organizations, programs and functions; public relations; trends in public planning; principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to: plan, organize, direct and coordinate a comprehensive area in planning affecting broad areas in community life and development; understand engineering information and concepts; establish and maintain effective relationships with public and private groups and individuals; speak and write effectively, including effective public speaking.

- Administers and coordinates planning activities for the County of Maui relating to the development and maintenance of a comprehensive program area;
- Oversees department regulatory compliance that relates to requirements for designated water management areas, water audit, dam safety programs and emergency action plans;
- Formulates and implements policies and procedures;
- Directs activities in meeting goals and objectives;
- Formulates and establishes programs in conducting technical research, analysis, projections and implementation of the County general plan and its related development plans relative to the area of program responsibilities;
- Reviews divisional operations and organization and initiates changes as required;
- Represents the Planning Department or Department of Water Supply before the County Council, Planning Commission, Commission on Water Resource Management, Legislature and various committees and community groups;
- Serves as consultant to management, Council members, other public agencies, the community and private groups on matters involving the program area of responsibility concerning research, regulation, planning and other related matters;
- Directs and reviews the preparation of reports and records;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
