SHIFT MAY VARY, MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ALL SHIFTS, INCLUDING: NIGHTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS.

This is a casual position for up to 16 hours per week. Employees will be scheduled based on operational needs.


Performs duties at a swimming pool to protect life, prevent accidents, and assist persons in distress; enforces pool safety regulations; provides water safety instructions; maintains pool and pool area; and performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This class differs from that of the Senior Pool Guard in that the Pool Guard performs duties at a swimming pool to protect life, prevent accidents, and enforce regulations; whereas the Senior Pool Guard supervises and participates in lifeguard duties and/or is independently responsible for all pool activities at an assigned pool.The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class.  The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
  • Watches over patrons at a public swimming pool to protect life and prevent accidents;
  • Rescues swimmers and assists others in distress;
  • Provides first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as necessary;
  • Recognizes when ill or injured persons require professional medical care;
  • Enforces safety regulations and takes corrective action to ensure the safety of patrons;
  • Warns parents or responsible adults not to leave young children unattended;
  • As required, prepares daily log and reports describing accidents, first aid given, drowning or near drowning and other unusual occurrences;
  • Participates in the coordination, set up and implementation of aquatic oriented programs as directed;
  • Maintains water quality standards and keeps a daily record of all information;
  • Operates all machinery of the manual and automatic circulation/filtration system;
  • Maintains proper chemical standards through the use of the automated chemical feed system, and makes adjustments when needed;
  • Maintains the proper storage and usage of hazardous chemicals, utilizing appropriate safety equipment as required;
  • Maintains pool, pool deck, buildings, locker rooms, spectator areas and walkways, and all surrounding areas to assure a safe, healthful environment;
  • Attends in-service training classes;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Training and Experience:  A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school.

License Requirement: Possession of a current American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training or Lifeguarding Certificate; a current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Certificate or ARC Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certificate; and a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3). Possession of a current ARC Water Safety Instructor Certificate prior to completion of the probationary period.

Knowledge of: Techniques and methods of preventing aquatic and non-aquatic injuries at swimming pool facilities; appropriate emergency responses to passive and active drowning situations; techniques of emergency life support including mouth-to-mouth and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and the use of a bag-valve-mask; first aid principles and practices; the use of personal protective equipment for body substance isolation; basic methods and practices of filtering and purifying swimming pool water including, but not limited to, various forms of chlorine, muriatic acid, sodium bicarbonate, soda ash, and stabilizers/conditioners; maintenance and operation of various pool equipment including, but not limited to, ramps/lifts for persons with disabilities, vacuums, lane lines, pool covers, starting blocks, etc.

Ability to: Demonstrate above average swimming ability; perform rescue skills and use of rescue equipment properly; rescue and remove persons from the water; provide first aid and recognize when ill or injured people require professional medical care; accurately complete incident reports and facility reports; deal tactfully and professional with the public and inform them of facility rules and regulations; use personal protective equipment to safely apply hazardous chemicals to ensure water quality; operate all machinery of the manual and automatic circulation/filtration systems and to maintain such equipment; read and follow verbal and written instructions; follow standard operating procedures and established policies.

Applicants are required to complete a performance exam.  To participate in the performance exam, you must sign a waiver verifying that you are physically and mentally fit to participate in the 400 meter swim.
