What are the responsibilities and job description for the Solid Waste Attendant position at County of Mason (WA)?
This classification is responsible for evaluating the acceptability of incoming waste, assessing fees and maintaining records at solid waste and transfer stations to insure appropriate disposal of waste and fair assessment of fees to public and to perform maintenance and basic repairs at solid waste work sites. Incumbents in this classification may be scheduled at the transfer station sites as needed for appropriate staffing.
Evaluate, measure, weigh and determine charge for waste for public and commercial contractor, to use the transfer stations scales Record, balance and maintain accurate records of fees collected Provide information and assistance to public regarding solid waste services available Maintain and work in the Household Hazardous Waste Area Maintain solid waste transfer station in a clean state, safe for operations, including litter and debris. Monitors recycle areas for proper disposal of recyclable items Report any problems to the Solid Waste Manager

The nature of the work is recurring with occasional variations from the norm; the incumbent is expected to use good judgment within established guidelines and procedures. Backup systems for error avoidance and detection include rechecking of cash collections prior to depositing and more senior Solid Waste Attendants available for unusual or new situations or questions.

Work is performed at a Solid Waste Transfer Station and involves working in all weather conditions and around materials that may be dangerous or hazardous. The employee must be able to perform essential tasks with or without reasonable accommodation. These tasks include standing, sitting, walking, bending, and reaching. The employee must be able to handle waste materials in a safe and healthy manner. Regular attendance during assigned work hours is an essential function. The employee communicates regularly with the public in person and by telephone to provide information and explain fee assessment procedures. The employee may be required to deal with disgruntled individuals requiring the use of conflict management skills. The position requires the ability to operate adding and calculating machines, as well as small hand tools, power tools, and basic gardening tools. The employee must be able to move up to 50 pounds occasionally. The position typically works a forty hour work week. Additional hours may be required based on operational needs.
Position requires mental acuity to ensure thorough analysis of situations in a fast-paced environment. Employees are required to maintain confidentiality of information within the department. Employees are frequently required to perform work confidently and under pressure for deadlines and is always required to maintain professional composure and tact, patience, and courtesy.
- A High School Diploma or GED
- A sufficient education to read and comprehend the laws and regulations required of the position
- Sufficient math skills to accurately calculate solid waste fees
- Experience interacting with the public in situations that required interpreting and enforcing regulations and laws.
- Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check that confirms suitability for work involving cash handling and financial responsibilities.
- Valid WA State Driver License and clean driving record
- HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) 24-hour class at minimum or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
This position is required to follow chapter 13 of the Mason County Personnel Policy. If offered the position you must provide a Abstract Driving Record from the WA State DOL.
