Road Department - Mechanic

• Performs a variety of gasoline engine, diesel engine, and heavy equipment inspection and repair.
• Analyzes and diagnoses vehicle problems, repairs vehicles, and overhauls engines.
• Completes required repair or maintenance work including tear-down, inspection, rebuilding or replacement of axles, rear ends, hydraulic cylinders, drive trains, gear boxed, pumps, lines, brakes, manual operated transmission parts, and ordinary automotive maintenance in accordance with work orders or assignments.
• Conducts basic electrical circuitry, maintenance, and repair; performs oxyacetylene and electric arc wielding.
• Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools, welding and soldering equipment, and maintains tolerance.
• Operates diagnostic equipment; completes tune-ups and carburetor repairs; repairs air conditioning systems; and replaces windows and windshields.
• Determines material list of supplies needed for each work order.
• Refers to written orders, manuals, directions, and instructions, to complete work.
• Maintains daily computerized records of services and repairs; opens, tracks, and closes out work orders; and conducts data entry on work orders.
• Maintains maintenance schedules for County-owned vehicles and calls in vehicles for routine maintenance as scheduled.
• Reports defects, faulty, and broken or worn-out parts and equipment found on vehicles and equipment and submits list of needed parts for each vehicle to Foreman.
• Inspects equipment and tools for defects; performs repairs and maintenance on equipment, as able; assists Foreman in scheduling repairs when needed.
• Responds to service calls; retrieves or “jump starts” stalled vehicles; and transports vehicles to other specialized facilities as requested.
• Operates heavy equipment in the field as needed.
• Maintains work area and tools in a safe, clean condition; follows safety protocols to eliminate safety hazards.
• Notifies supervisor of necessary repairs or replacements.
• Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
• Attends and participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
• Ensures work adheres to proper safety procedures.
• Complies with all property and department policies and procedures.
• Maintains and assures confidentiality of all departmental matters and records.
• Remains flexible in working hours as needed to meet deadlines and support organizational needs.
• Contributes to a team effort to achieve goals and deliver successful outcomes.
• Executes other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.

The duties of this position are not limited to those set forth above. The incumbent will perform such functions, duties and assignments as directed by supervisor and consistent with ability, background and expertise.

• High school diploma/GED.
• Three (3) years of work experience with maintenance and repair of medium to heavy gasoline and diesel powered automotive or construction equipment, heavy equipment operation in the field, and maintaining inventory.
• Ability to acquire and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CLASS A) with N or X endorsement.
• A combination of relevant education and related work experience may be considered within six months.
• Valid driver’s license is required when operating a vehicle for work-related purposes.
• Must successfully complete pre-employment requirements.

• Operating air tools, including handguns, drills and ratchets and using oxy-acetylene torch.
• Reading and understanding shop manuals; and gauges and dials such as voltmeters, ohmmeters, and tachometers.
• Dismounting, repairing, and remounting tires on vehicles and heavy equipment.
• Diagnosing, dismantling, and reassembling engines.
• Front end, front and rear brake, drive line, manual transmission, automatic transmission, rear end (differential), and front axle work.
• Analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.

Ability to:

• Analyze and detect defects and perform major and minor repairs on heavy gasoline and diesel-powered construction equipment, medium to heavy automotive equipment, small engines such as weed eaters, and chainsaws.

Work Environment:

Work is regularly performed in a garage setting and frequently outdoors. Occasional exposure to hazardous materials; dust, fumes, airborne particles, and/or allergens; excessive noise; and working near hazardous/moving equipment or machinery. Incumbent is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. Incumbent will use protective clothing, equipment, devices and/or materials frequently. Travel is required to transport vehicles or retrieve stalled vehicles. Evening work is frequent and weekend work is occasional.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is sometimes required to climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Equipment, tools, and materials:

Tools used in performing the essential functions of the job: computers; electrical diagnostic tools; loader, grader, and/or bulldozer; industrial trucks or automobiles; vehicle jacks and hoists; welding equipment; tire machines; cherry picker, transmission jacks, and dollies; hand and power tools; air guns, sledgehammers, pry bars, cheater pipes, bars, and chains; lubricating sprays, solvents and rags or towels.
