Water Microbiologist III

Job Summary:

Performs a variety of difficult and complex microbiological examinations of water samples in a laboratory; has technical responsibility for a specialized functional area of a laboratory; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

Performs a variety of difficult and complex bacteriologic and biologic analysis of water samples;

Assigns, supervises, and maintains technical control over the virological testing and research activities of a laboratory;

Reviews and evaluates results of microbiological tests and recommends and outlines investigative actions;

Schedules and supervises the collection of water samples in the field;

Analyzes and interprets findings and prepares research papers on results of laboratory tests;

Reviews and recommends improvements to work methods and operating practices and procedures;

Assists in directing and supervising investigations of consumer complaints regarding water quality;

Maintains records and reports results of laboratory tests performed;

Gives talks, demonstrations, and lectures on laboratory activities and on certain aspects of public health concerning the water supply;

Reads technical literature to keep abreast of developments in the field;

Maintains laboratory apparatus and equipment, prepares budget covering virological aspects of laboratory work;

Supervises subordinate positions within the laboratory as assigned; and

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in bacteriology, biology, microbiology, or a related field; and

two (2) years of professional laboratory work experience involving the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and/or control of microorganisms.
