Performs a variety of microbiologist examinations of water samples in a laboratory; independently conducts given portions of studies and research projects; and performs other related duties as required.Examples of Duties:

Performs standard and special bacteriologic and biologic analysis of water, including quantitative and qualitative determinations of organisms, tests to gauge water quality and suitability for intended use, etc.;
Conducts chlorine residual tests and makes chlorine demand analyses;
Conducts special studies and research such as membrane filter studies, isolation of bacteria in water distribution systems, underground water pollution studies, microbiological studies of stream waters, effects on waterworks materials on bacteria tests performed;
Investigates consumer complaints regarding water quality;
Reads technical literature to keep abreast of new developments in the field;
Maintains laboratory apparatus and equipment, prepares culture media, stains, reagents, and stock solutions;
Assists in public health control of water distribution systems involving broken main repairs and connections; and
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in bacteriology, biology, microbiology, or a related field; and
one (1) year of professional laboratory work experience involving the detection, isolation, identification, cultivation, use and/or control of microorganisms.
