Job Summary
The Motor Vehicle Clerk provides customer service and administrative support for a variety of motor vehicle transactions, including titles, registrations, renewals, license plates, and vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections. This position serves as a cashier, collects and processes payments, performs accurate data entry, and maintains records and supporting documentation in accordance with Idaho law, Idaho Transportation Department requirements, County policies, and departmental procedures.
Essential Functions
- Process motor vehicle title transactions, including new titles, title transfers, repossessions, out-of-state titles, and dealer transactions;
- Process vehicle registrations, renewals, and the issuance of license plates, decals, and other applicable documents;
- Perform vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections and verifications as required;
- Provide professional and effective customer service to customers, County employees, and the general public;
- Collect and accurately process required State and County fees and other applicable charges;
- Operate applicable computer systems to enter, update, and maintain vehicle registration and title records;
- Balance and reconcile the daily cash drawer and complete required end-of-day reports;
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and supporting documentation;
- Maintain confidentiality and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures;
- Follow applicable Idaho laws, Idaho Transportation Department requirements, County policies, and departmental procedures.
Additional Responsibilities & Duties
- Communicate and coordinate with co-workers to support efficient departmental operations;
- Perform general office and clerical duties as assigned;
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
- Ability to provide effective customer service in a high-volume, public-facing environment;
- Ability to accurately perform data entry and maintain detailed records;
- Ability to handle cash, process payments, and perform basic mathematical calculations accurately;
- Ability to learn quickly and apply applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures;
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information;
- Must be DEPENDABLE and maintain regular and reliable attendance;
- Must successfully complete required pre-employment background screening and drug testing.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required;
- One (1) to two (2) years of customer service, clerical, cashiering, or related experience preferred;
- Experience handling cash and processing payments preferred;
- Experience with data entry and general office equipment preferred;
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred;
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the job may be considered.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with frequent interaction with the public;
- Position may involve a high-volume workload and frequent interruptions;
- Requires the ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer;
- Requires frequent use of hands for typing, filing, handling documents, and operating office equipment;
- Requires occasional lifting and/or moving of up to 25 pounds;
- Requires the ability to communicate clearly and exchange accurate information;
- May involve interaction with upset or frustrated customers;
- Regularly requires outdoor work to perform vehicle identification number (VIN) inspections and verifications;
- May involve exposure to outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
