What are the responsibilities and job description for the JUDICAL ASSISTANT I position at County of Greenville?
Provides customer service to individuals and families throughout probate process: interviews personal representatives and/or family member(s); determines whether to proceed informally with administration or whether they need to hire an attorney to proceed with some type of litigation; returns phone calls and emails; respects confidentiality of information where appropriate; and discusses case files with attorneys, paralegals, banks, bond companies, mortuaries creditors, and other interested persons. Administers assigned probate caseload: reviews documents filed by the personal representative to determine accuracy and scans into database; checks information against obituary, Register of Deeds, state offices, Department of Motor Vehicles, etc.; reads and interprets legal documents, such as Wills, Trusts, Testamentary Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Deeds, Agreements, Disclaimers, Receipts and Releases, Bonds, Bond Waivers, Assignments, Tax Documents, and other items to determine distribution of property according to decedent wishes; files time sensitive claims against estates; calculates probate fee for County general fund; reviews accuracy of final accounting of estate assets and legal sufficiency of estate administration documents; and drafts closing orders for the Judges' signature once estate is ready to close. Communicates and interacts with supervisor, other employees, clients, attorneys, County and court officials, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Performs general office duties associated with Probate Court functions; opens, distributes and/or processes mail received; reviews documents; opens and closes files; makes copies; sends faxes; sets appoint; makes suggestions on improvement of court processes, forms and workflow; and serves as back up for other department staff as needed. Performs other related duties as required and assigned. Associate degree in Business, Paralegal Studies or related field required; supplemented by one year of court or legal work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License. Must possess and maintain certification as a Notary Public.
