The Fresno County Department of Internal Services is currently offering a challenging and rewarding career for a skilled, experienced plumbing professional interested in serving as a Maintenance Plumber.

Maintenance Plumbers are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems and related equipment at Fresno County facilities. This is a journey level (experienced level) classification and the incumbent is expected to use appropriate procedures and techniques in accomplishing assigned tasks.
Note: The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.

As a condition of employment, selected candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities. Fresno County detention facilities are "No Hostage" facilities. This means in the event you are taken hostage, the County will not bargain for your safe release.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

Samples of Duties

  • Performs maintenance of plumbing systems and related equipment.
  • Installs, tests, maintains, and repairs sewer, water, steam, heat, gas, and drainage lines and related equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing fixtures, including drinking fountains, sinks, toilets, and urinals.
  • Inspects facilities to identify plumbing maintenance needs.
  • Plans plumbing work, determines materials and supplies required, and estimates costs; orders materials and supplies.
  • Assists in the maintenance of sewage lift stations.
  • May respond to after-hour emergencies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Plumbing codes, theory, design, principles and practices;
  • Materials, methods, and tools involved in rough/finish plumbing work;
  • Proper use and operation of hand tools, as well as electric power tools, including their maintenance and repair;
  • On-the-job safety and use of personal protective equipment;
  • Design techniques including interpretation of blueprints, technical plans, drawings, models, and other construction documents.

Skills/Abilities to:
  • Interpret work instructions and safety labels;
  • Interpret blueprint drawings and related construction documents;
  • Practice appropriate safety precautions and procedures;
  • Effectively operate hand and power tools used to install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems and related equipment;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Install or adapt equipment and technology to County facilities;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels, as well as with other agencies and the public;
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of initiative, maturity, integrity, accountability, and good judgment;
  • Respond to after-hour emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications

OPTION 1:

Experience: Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing piping, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment in a commercial and/or industrial setting.

OPTION 2:

Certification: Possession of a certificate of completion from a plumbing apprenticeship program recognized by the California Apprenticeship Council, the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, or a state apprenticeship council authorized by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training.

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time, paid work experience installing, maintaining, and repairing piping, plumbing fixtures, and related equipment in a commercial and/or industrial setting.

In addition to the options listed above, the following is also required:

License: Possession of a valid class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

Other: As a condition of employment, selected candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance to access Fresno County detention facilities.

SELECTION PROCESS:


Depending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:

  • Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination
  • Written Examination - If required, the written examination may be offered in an online format. Please indicate on the supplemental questionnaire if you have the ability to complete an online examination.

Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months (and may be extended up to an additional 12 months), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
