INVESTIGATOR (Public Defender)

Position Description Non-Exempt

To assist attorneys and clients with information and administration and clerical duties regarding issues relating to public defender’s office.

1. Takes applications and interviews new commitments charged with crimes.

2. Conducts initial interviews with client and/or witness(es).

3. Conducts and investigates legal issues as required.

4. Serves subpoenas and other legal papers as needed.

5. Assists with clerical duties of public defender’s office, i.e. photo copying, faxing, etc.

6. Operates various types of office equipment as necessary to carry out job duties.

7. Checks background information on clients.

8. Interacts with internal government offices and external government departments, police departments, prisons, district justices, etc.

9. Interacts with prisoners in obtaining required information and/or documents.

10. Travels frequently to prisons, etc. as needed to talk with prisoners, serve subpoenas, pick up mail or other job related duties.

10. Assists in getting prisoner to sign needed forms and documents.

1. Attends meetings, trainings or in services as required.

2. Performs other job-related duties as required.

Receives instruction and supervision from Chief Public Defender and Office Manager in regard to daily work duties.

1. Works in adequate work space, lighting and ventilation, but subject to fluctuations in temperatures.

2. Normal exposure to noise, disruptions and stress.

3. Normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.

4. Works in conditions of potential outbursts or aggressive behavior of clients.

5. Travels frequently to perform essential job duties; exposed to outdoor conditions and icy roadways.

Position Description

1. Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.

2. Must be able to sit, stand for long periods, with intermittent walking, driving and occasional climbing of stairs, twisting, stooping, grasping or reaching to carry out job duties.

3. Dexterity requirements range from simple to coordinated movements of fingers/hands; feet/legs; torso as necessary to carry out job duties.

4. Light work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with maximum weight of twenty pounds.

5. Must have agility to move frequently throughout work day to perform essential job duties.

6. Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stress of the position.

7. Must be able to pay close attention to details and concentrate on work.

8. Must be able to work with clients who carry or may carry active hepatitis, HIV or other infectious diseases.

A.

High school diploma or equivalent, plus additional technical training in police or criminal justice system.

B.

None required; 1-2 years working experience in legal, police and/or probation environment preferred.

1. Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential functions of job.

2. Must possess effective communication skills.

3. Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with clients, co-workers and others.

4. Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to client information and records.

5. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver=s license and a willingness to travel as needed to complete job duties.

6. Must possess some knowledge of the criminal justice system and the court/legal requirements and ability to apply same to job duties.

7. Must possess knowledge of the policies and procedures of the department and the ability to apply same to job duties.

8. Must possess ability to investigate cases, interview prisoners and interact effectively with clients, legal and government authorities.view

Pay: $15.00 - $16.32 per hour
