Dutchess County Department of Public Works - Highway
2026 Salary: $70,390
This is a working, supervisory position responsible for overseeing a small number of employees
engaged in basic to complex road maintenance, repair and improvement activities in a specific
geographical area. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining an outpost and its
related facilities and equipment in operating condition. The incumbent regularly inspects roads
and signage and investigates complaints within the assigned area. Supervision is exercised over
tree maintenance staff, construction equipment operators, drivers and laborers assigned to the
work unit. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level management
employee. The incumbent is required to respond to emergency situations and will work outside
of normal work hours during snow and ice events and for other public safety situations that
require immediate actions. Work may include serving as an after-hours on-call point of contact
for the Highway Construction & Maintenance Division to address road hazards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EITHER: (A) Five (5) years of experience in road construction and maintenance work,
one (1) year of which included supervisory responsibility;
OR: (B) Five (5) years of service in the Dutchess County Department of Public
Works in the title of Construction Equipment Operator II/Instructor,
Construction Equipment Operator II,/Mechanic, Construction Equipment
Operator II, Senior Bridge Maintainer, Tree Climber or a combination
immediately preceding the date of application.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
1. Candidates must possess a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver's license at
time of application and to maintain position. This license must contain no restrictions
other than those relating to personal physical conditions. Such restrictions will be
reviewed on a case by case basis for compatibility with job duties and will not be an
automatic bar to employment.
2. Incumbents must obtain certification in first-aid training within six (6) months of
appointment. Such certification must remain valid to maintain position.
FINGERPRINTING: A fingerprint supported background investigation is required before an
appointment is made to some positions. Pursuant to New York State Executive Law, the
Division of Criminal Justice Services requires that a fee accompany each such request for a
search. It is due once a job offer is made and accepted by the applicant.
