Disease Intervention Specialist - HIV/STI

The Disease Intervention Specialist will take a lead role in working with healthcare and non-healthcare congregate settings (e.g., long-term care facilities, behavioral health facilities, shelters, group homes, etc.) to prevent, investigate, and contain outbreaks of infectious diseases such as STDs, COVID-19 and others. This position will identify and monitor outbreaks across Delaware County especially those in high-risk congregate care settings. This position will work closely with staff from the Environmental Services and Population Health Divisions on infectious disease outbreak response. The Disease Intervention Specialist will also work with Infection Preventionists or staff responsible for infection prevention at facilities to provide advice on best practices and help them implement strategies to contain outbreaks.
  • Monitor individual case reports and internal reports to identify cases associated with congregate settings.
  • Coordinate ongoing surveillance and investigation with facilities experiencing infectious disease outbreaks.
  • Coordinate ongoing surveillance and investigation with neighborhoods, schools, events and other settings experiencing infectious disease outbreaks.
  • Quickly provide guidance on implementing infection control strategies to prevent the spread of infectious disease.
  • Work closely with the Environmental Services and Population Health Divisions to communicate with healthcare facilities about materials or support needed for infection control and prevention. 
  • Coordinate laboratory testing with public health reference laboratories.
  • Provide data support when needed for onsite specimen collection and vaccination clinics.
  • Promote infectious disease prevention activities within healthcare facilities.
  • Participate in telephone duty during normal business hours, including receipt of called-in case reports, and provision of clinical or public health consultation or recommendations to healthcare professionals and the general public.
  • Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as assigned.
  • Bachelor?s degree required, Master?s or Nursing degree preferred, preferably in epidemiology or a related public health or laboratory field.
  • Excellent organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to organize and present information effectively.
  • Candidates should have strong critical thinking skills, excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Access and Excel or similar data management software.
  • Knowledge of SAS software or previous data management experience is highly desirable.
  • Flexibility, professionalism and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are highly valued attributes.
  • Equally comfortable working individually and within a team environment that emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration in a dynamic urban health department. 
  • Valid driver?s license is required in order to facilitate local travel for investigative activities.
