About the Position

Performs difficult skilled technical and administrative work planning, directing, and participating in field inspections and reinspection’s of residential, commercial, and industrial facilities for compliance with building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and fire codes, reviewing permit applications, issuing permits, assisting the public, preparing and maintaining files and records, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Planning Director. Continuous supervision is exercised over the Building Inspector.

Job Duties

  • Performs field inspections of commercial construction and existing structures for compliance with building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes; maintains records of inspections.
  • Oversees building permit issuance and reviews all major permit applications; verifies calculations, permit fees and related permit information.
  • Performs plan reviews.
  • Answers questions and responds to inquiries from private citizens, contractors, and builders; provides interpretation of building codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Hears and makes investigations of complaints of inspection activities, takes appropriate action; prepares evidence and testifies in court on code violation cases.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

Position Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical code enforcement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building, construction, engineering and structural engineering principles and practices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of State building and related codes, laws and ordinances and practices, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of building construction materials and methods and of stages of construction, when possible, violations and defects may be most easily observed and corrected.
  • Ability to detect poor workmanship, inferior materials and hazards of fire and collapse.
  • Ability to read and interpret codes, manufacturer specifications and building site plans and apply code requirements to visual inspections.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints accurately and to compare them with construction in process.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to make public presentations; ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to deal firmly and tactfully in enforcing ordinances and codes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates, contractors, consultants, engineers, architects, government officials and the public.

Education, Experience and Supplemental Information

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Seven to ten (7-10) years of experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Obtain Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical certifications within two years of hire.
  • Fire Level III Standard certification within two years of hire preferred.

Pay: $72,457.00 - $115,932.00 per year
