Athletic Fields Specialist

Job Summary

Responsible for performing skilled manual and technical work involved in the maintenance and operation of public athletic grounds and facilities to include, but not limited to; athletic field preparation, as well as, assisting work planning by scheduling, organizing, and securing materials and equipment for the accomplishment of assigned tasks. Additional responsibilities include interaction with the public, athletic directors, coaches, players, and event organizers.

Job Functions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Natural grass athletic field maintenance and management. This includes 5-baseball fields, 2-softball fields, 3-football fields, 6-soccer fields, multiple practice fields, and 2-adult softball fields throughout the County.

• Cultural practices in the maintenance of athletic fields include, but not limited to; aerification, over seeding, edging, infield grooming, topdressing, irrigation operation and maintenance, etc.

• Operates a variety of tractors and specialized attachments used for technical work in the areas of turf care, mowing, irrigation, aeration, horticulture, and preparation of ballfields. Also operates power and hand mowers, line trimmers, blowers, edging equipment, ballfield groomers, and automotive equipment to maintain athletic fields and surrounding areas.

• Implements regularly scheduled maintenance activities on the athletic fields at the Culpeper Sports Complex such as mowing, seeding, aeration, debris removal, infield grooming, edging ballfields, etc. Also participates in planning and implementing field renovations, combination planning, and field design(s).

• Operates manual and automatic irrigation systems as required. Assists in maintenance and repair of irrigation and drainage systems. Reports serious issues to the Parks Superintendent.

• Determines field conditions (i.e., playability of the fields) in the event of inclement weather.

• Inspects grounds, athletic facilities, and buildings at the Culpeper Sports Complex daily looking for safety concerns and maintenance requirements. Completes damage report and notifies supervisor of necessary repairs. As time allows, assists with minor repair(s) to buildings, structures, and equipment involving basic building trade skills.

• Cleans buildings including restrooms, structures, and all surface areas daily. Replenishes restroom supplies as needed and if necessary.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma; supplemented by 3 years of experience in athletic field maintenance.

Special Qualifications:

Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the regulations, standards, policies, and procedures of park maintenance.

• Knowledge of the safety practices applicable to operating handheld equipment needed for park maintenance.

• Ability to operate various office equipment such as a computer, fax, phone, etc.

• Ability to express orally and in writing.

• Ability to exercise track and courtesy when dealing with customers.

• Ability to perform mathematical operations.

• Ability to reference data such as policy manuals and regulations.

• Ability to perform the highest level of customer service.

• Ability to work in a team environment.

Working Conditions & Disclaimer

This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as medium work. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Will regularly stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, and will be frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Tasks involve the ability to operate equipment such as pruners, rototillers, blowers, weed-whackers, riding mowers, lawn sweeper, utility vehicle, skid loader, small excavator, aerator, and other equipment to complete tasks
