The Chester County Library, Exton has an opening for a Librarian II in the Technical Services Department.
This full time position is responsible for cataloging materials in a variety of formats and assisting in the maintenance of the online catalog for the 18-library Chester County Library System. This position may also oversee assigned cataloging projects. Job tasks include: online editing of bibliographic records from SkyRiver; creating original catalog records when necessary; adding items to existing records in the online library database; adding and editing eMaterial records; and assisting in maintaining the quality of the library database by verifying and using standard forms of headings and by correcting errors and inconsistencies.
This position requires an ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science, an ability to obtain a Pennsylvania Professional Librarian Certification, at least one year of cataloging experience, knowledge of national cataloging standards, and sufficient general knowledge to be able to catalog materials in a broad range of subject areas. The person in this position must have excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong time management skills.
All library positions require the following criminal background and child abuse clearances: Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP); Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services (Child Abuse); and Fingerprint based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent (FBI).
Requires a state child abuse clearance.
All employees of the Chester County Library are considered a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse under the Child Protective Services Law (Title 23 Pa. C.S.A. Chapter 63).
A criminal background check is required.
- Catalog new library materials using Skyriver (national bibliographic database and cataloging utility). and Z39.50 databases available in Sierra.
- Create original cataloging records when necessary.
- Work on or supervise cataloging projects, such as reclassification.
- Resolve cataloging problems.
- Assist in maintaining the quality of the library database by correcting errors and inconsistencies.
- Assist in maintaining the quality of the library database by verifying and using standard forms of headings.
- Assist with training of system staff in adding items as necessary.
- Attend county workshops and continuing education classes, as required.
- Perform other duties, tasks, and special projects, as required.
- Master’s degree from a college or university in Library or Information Science
- PA Professional Librarian Certification or the ability to obtain a PA Professional Librarian Certification within the first three months employment.
- At least one year of cataloging experience.
- Knowledge of national cataloging standards (including Dewey Decimal System, Anglo-American cataloging rules and Library of Congress subject headings).

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand; sit; walk; kneel, stoop or squat; talk or hear. Occasionally, the employee will need to reach or work with arms above shoulder height, bend or twist at the waist, climb stairs, , push up to 75 pounds, and lift and carry from 25 to 30 pounds for a distance of approximately three feet.
The specific vision requirements listed for this position are:
- Close vision: the ability to read a PC monitor, often for extended periods of time; must be able to read a variety of print formats, including charts, maps and small print.
